The legacy of late billionaire Mohamed Al Fayed, once chairman of Fulham Football Club, has come under increasing scrutiny following new allegations of sexual assault and misconduct during his time at the helm. Al Fayed, who passed away last year at the age of 94, has been accused by more than 20 female ex-employees of sexual assault and rape, according to a BBC documentary that aired last week. As the claims unfold, lawyers representing the victims have confirmed that they have received “several enquiries” relating to the club during Al Fayed’s 16-year ownership between 1997 and 2013.

The revelations have ignited discussions about the culture and oversight at Fulham Football Club during Al Fayed’s reign, raising questions about whether these alleged incidents were known or ignored by those involved with the organization at the time.

Allegations Expand Beyond Harrods

The group of barristers representing the accusers, known as Justice for Harrods Survivors, has been central to uncovering these claims. In a news conference last week, a spokesperson for the group described Al Fayed as a “monster” who used threats and intimidation to keep his victims silent. The allegations initially stemmed from his time as the owner of Harrods, the iconic London department store he owned from 1985 to 2010.

A spokesperson for Justice for Harrods Survivors said, “We have received several new enquiries from individuals who were connected to Fulham Football Club during Mr. Al Fayed’s tenure. These individuals have shared experiences similar to those we have been documenting from his time at Harrods. We are working closely with these new victims to ensure their voices are heard.”

The group has indicated that more details will emerge in the coming weeks as they investigate further. While the initial focus of the documentary was on Al Fayed’s conduct at Harrods, the expanding scope of the allegations could have serious implications for Fulham Football Club’s reputation and its handling of these matters during his ownership.

Fulham FC Responds to the Allegations

Fulham Football Club has publicly addressed the growing controversy. In a statement, from the club said it is “in the process of establishing whether anyone at the club is or has been affected by the reports concerning Mr. Al Fayed.” The club has also made it clear that it will fully cooperate with any investigations or legal proceedings related to the allegations.

The Football Association (FA), which oversees professional football in England, has also weighed in. A spokesperson for the FA stated that they are “aware of the reports and will remain in contact with Fulham FC to monitor the matter.” However, the FA has not yet announced any formal investigation into the club’s past practices during Al Fayed’s ownership.

While the club has distanced itself from the events alleged to have taken place years ago, the mounting pressure from the new wave of accusations has led to increased calls for transparency and accountability from the current management.

Al Fayed’s Complex Legacy at Fulham

During his time as chairman of Fulham Football Club, Mohamed Al Fayed was credited with transforming the club from relative obscurity to Premier League status. Under his ownership, Fulham rose through the ranks of English football, reaching the Premier League in 2001 and even securing a place in the 2010 UEFA Europa League final. His leadership at the club, coupled with his flamboyant personality and penchant for the dramatic, made him a popular, albeit controversial, figure in English football.
