Steven Naismith has released a heartfelt statement following his dismissal as manager of Heart of Midlothian, endorsing the club’s board as “the right people to guide the club forward” despite the disappointing end to his tenure. The former Hearts player and coach, who had been at the club for over six years, was relieved of his duties after a string of poor results, culminating in an eighth consecutive defeat, this time away to St Mirren.
The 38-year-old had taken over as manager in April 2023, following Robbie Neilson’s departure. However, despite the promise he showed early on, Naismith was unable to turn Hearts’ fortunes around this season, leaving the club in a precarious position both in the league and in cup competitions. His statement, released a day after his dismissal, reflects his disappointment, but also his respect for the club and its leadership.
Naismith’s Journey at Hearts
Steven Naismith first joined Hearts in January 2018 as a player, bringing a wealth of experience from his time at Rangers, Everton, and the Scotland national team. Over the next two and a half years, he became a key figure for the Edinburgh club, leading both on and off the pitch. His commitment to Hearts saw him transition from player to coach upon his retirement in 2021, continuing his influence in a different role.
In April 2023, following a run of poor results under then-manager Robbie Neilson, Hearts appointed Naismith as caretaker boss. His knowledge of the club and his leadership qualities made him a popular choice to take over on a permanent basis. Despite a rocky start, Naismith managed to guide the team through some difficult matches, showing glimpses of tactical acumen and the potential to thrive as a manager. However, the current season did not unfold as hoped, with the team slipping into a run of poor form.
A Frustrating Campaign
Naismith’s statement following his dismissal reflects the frustrations he faced during the 2023/24 campaign. He acknowledged the expectations that come with managing a big club like Hearts and admitted that the team’s performances simply had not been up to standard.
“I am disappointed that my time at Heart of Midlothian FC has come to an end,” Naismith wrote. “This season has been a frustrating one for a number of reasons and ultimately it just hasn’t been good enough.”
The former manager did not shy away from the responsibility that comes with such a role, stating that when a team goes through a bad run of form, the pressure inevitably mounts, especially at a club like Hearts, where expectations are high.
Endorsement of the Hearts Board
Despite the difficult circumstances surrounding his exit, Naismith showed no ill will toward the Hearts board. In fact, he was full of praise for the leadership of the club, expressing confidence in their ability to steer Hearts through this turbulent period and beyond.
“I fully believe that the board and the people running the club are the right ones to guide Hearts in the future,” he stated, showing his respect for the club’s hierarchy. Naismith’s public endorsement of the board reflects his loyalty and commitment to the club, even in the face of personal disappointment.
His relationship with the Hearts leadership, built over his years as both a player and coach, appears to have remained strong, despite the circumstances of his dismissal.
