Manchester City playmaker Jack Grealish has opened up about his disappointment after being left out of England’s Euro 2024 squad. At 29 years old, Grealish believes he should have been part of the 26-man team that competed in the tournament, which ended in a heartbreaking final defeat to Spain. Despite this setback, the midfielder has found renewed confidence under interim England manager Lee Carsley, who has given him a prominent role since taking over temporarily from Gareth Southgate.
Grealish shared his thoughts on both his exclusion from the squad and his rejuvenated international career under Carsley. “I was devastated not to be in the England squad, especially with how much that tournament meant to everyone. But I can’t speak highly enough of Lee Carsley. He’s given me the opportunity to start both games since he’s taken over, and that’s been a big confidence boost for me.”
The Euro 2024 Snub: A Tough Blow
For Grealish, missing out on the opportunity to represent his country in one of football’s most prestigious competitions was a significant blow. England’s run to the Euro 2024 final, only to lose 2-1 to Spain, was filled with moments where Grealish felt he could have made a difference. Despite his confidence in his abilities, Grealish admitted that he understood why Southgate might have looked elsewhere, saying, “I didn’t have the best season for City, I can admit that.”
The omission was particularly difficult for a player who had been a regular under Southgate in the years leading up to the tournament. However, his form for Manchester City in the 2023-24 season was less consistent than in previous years, and he struggled to make the kind of impact that saw him flourish in the past.
“I know I wasn’t at my best last season,” Grealish said. “But I still feel like I could have offered something different to the England team. Sometimes, it’s about having a balance across the pitch, and I see myself as a more experienced player now, someone who can bring leadership and creativity in key moments.”
Lee Carsley’s Vote of Confidence
Since Southgate stepped down following the Euro 2024 final, interim manager Lee Carsley has taken charge of the national team, and one of his first decisions was to bring Grealish back into the fold. Grealish has started in both of Carsley’s matches as England boss, providing the midfielder with a chance to prove his worth at the international level once again.
“I can’t speak highly enough of Lee,” Grealish said. “Carsley come in and given me the chance to show what I can do, and I’ve felt that trust. After missing out on the Euros, it was exactly what I needed. It’s been a real boost to my confidence.”
Carsley’s faith in Grealish has been evident in his selection, and the City star has responded positively. In England’s recent matches under Carsley, Grealish has played with renewed energy and determination, helping to create chances and driving forward with the ball in his signature style. His performances suggest that, under the right management, he remains a key asset to the national team.
Reflecting on His Man City Form
Grealish remains confident in his ability to bounce back. The 2023-24 campaign was a challenging one for the midfielder, with injuries and competition for places limiting his impact. However, Grealish has vowed to improve and prove his doubters wrong.
“It was frustrating at times, but that’s football. You have ups and downs, and it’s all about how you respond. I’m working hard to get back to my best, and I believe I can play a big part for both City and England in the future.”
Grealish also pointed out that his role within the City team has evolved, with Pep Guardiola often using him in different tactical systems. This, according to Grealish, has sometimes made it difficult to produce the same level of flair and creativity that fans expect. But I’m learning and adapting, and I’m determined to make the most of every opportunity.”
