Real Madrid’s quest to defend their LaLiga title got off to a frustrating start as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Mallorca at the Estadi Mallorca Son Moix. Real Madrid came into the match with high expectations, especially with the anticipation surrounding Kylian Mbappé’s first appearance in the famous white shirt. However, it was Rodrygo who initially stole the spotlight. The Brazilian winger opened the scoring in the 14th minute with a well-taken goal that showcased his growing maturity and confidence.
The goal came after a slick passing move that involved Luka Modrić and Federico Valverde, who combined to create space for Rodrygo on the edge of the box. The 23-year-old took a touch to control the ball before curling a low shot into the bottom corner, leaving Mallorca’s goalkeeper Predrag Rajković with no chance.
Rodrygo’s goal was a reminder of his importance to the team, particularly in the absence of Karim Benzema, who has been struggling with injuries. However, despite the early advantage, Madrid were unable to capitalize on their dominance and put the game out of reach.
Mbappé’s Debut Fizzles Out
Much of the pre-match hype centered around Kylian Mbappé, who finally made his debut for Real Madrid after years of speculation. The French superstar was thrust into the starting lineup, and fans eagerly awaited the magic he is known for.
However, Mbappé’s debut was not the fairy tale many had hoped for. Although he showed glimpses of his explosive pace and skill, he struggled to make a decisive impact on the match. Mallorca’s defenders, particularly Antonio Raíllo and Martin Valjent, did an excellent job of containing him, limiting his opportunities to shine.
Mbappé’s best chance came in the 33rd minute when he found space on the left flank and cut inside to unleash a powerful shot, but Rajković was equal to it, making a sharp save to deny him a debut goal. As the game progressed, Mbappé became increasingly isolated and was eventually substituted in the 75th minute.
Mallorca’s Resilience and Muriqi’s Equalizer
Mallorca, to their credit, were not overawed by the occasion and gradually grew into the game after conceding early. Muriqi, who was a handful for Madrid’s center-backs throughout the match, got his reward in the 60th minute. The Kosovan striker rose highest to meet a perfectly weighted cross from Jaume Costa, directing his header past a helpless Thibaut Courtois to bring Mallorca level.
The goal sparked jubilant scenes among the home fans and provided Mallorca with the belief that they could take something from the match. From that point on, they defended resolutely and even created a few more half-chances, though they were unable to find a winner.
Madrid’s Struggles in Attack
For Real Madrid, the draw was a disappointing result, not just because of the two points dropped but also because of the manner in which they played. Despite dominating possession, especially in the first half, Madrid struggled to create clear-cut chances and looked disjointed at times in the final third.
Rodrygo and Vinícius Júnior were lively on the wings, but without Benzema’s movement and link-up play, the team struggled to break down a well-drilled Mallorca defence. The midfield trio of Modrić, Valverde, and Toni Kroos controlled the game, but there was a noticeable lack of penetration in their play.
Ancelotti’s decision to start Mbappé as a central striker rather than in his preferred wide role also raised questions. While the Frenchman is more than capable of playing through the middle, he appeared to be less effective in this position, often finding himself crowded out by Mallorca’s defenders.
