As Manchester United continues to fine-tune their squad ahead of the new season, former coach Rene Meulensteen has voiced his opinion on the club’s potential pursuit of Dutch defender Matthijs de Ligt. According to Meulensteen, de Ligt would be a strong fit for Manchester United and the Premier League, but he has also raised concerns about the player’s abilities on the ball. This insight comes at a crucial time as United looks to bolster their defensive options with high-profile signings.

Matthijs de Ligt: A Strong Candidate for United

Matthijs de Ligt’s  has built a reputation as one of Europe’s most talented center-backs, having demonstrated his defensive prowess in both Serie A with Juventus and in the Champions League. His physical presence, leadership qualities, and experience at a young age make him an appealing target for a Manchester United side that has struggled with defensive consistency in recent years.

Rene Meulensteen, who has extensive experience with United, including a stint as Sir Alex Ferguson’s assistant, believes that de Ligt’s attributes align well with the demands of the Premier League. “De Ligt has all the qualities you’d want in a central defender: strength, aerial ability, and a good understanding of the game,” Meulensteen remarked.

The Premier League Challenge

Players who excel in other leagues often find the transition challenging due to these unique demands. Meulensteen’s endorsement of de Ligt acknowledges that the Dutchman possesses the fundamental qualities needed to succeed in England’s top flight. His experience playing against top European clubs and in high-pressure situations suggests that he has the mental fortitude required to thrive in the Premier League.

However, Meulensteen also pointed out that de Ligt’s adaptation to English football would require careful consideration. “The Premier League is a different beast compared to Serie A,” he noted. “It’s faster and more aggressive, and defenders need to be able to handle that. While de Ligt has shown he can deal with high-pressure situations, he would need to adapt to the specific demands of the Premier League.”

Concerns About Ball Skills

Despite his defensive strengths, Meulensteen has raised concerns about de Ligt’s proficiency with the ball at his feet. This aspect of the game has become crucial, with teams needing center-backs who can comfortably play out from defense, initiate attacks, and make accurate passes under pressure.

Meulensteen has highlighted that this might be an area where de Ligt could face challenges. “While de Ligt is a solid defender, there are questions about his ability to play out from the back,” Meulensteen explained. “In today’s game, center-backs need to be more than just good defenders; they also need to be comfortable with the ball and capable of contributing to the team’s build-up play. This could be an area where he might need to improve.”

For Manchester United, this feedback is particularly relevant. The club has been working to modernize its defensive approach under Erik ten Hag, who values ball-playing defenders capable of building from the back. The need for a center-back who can excel in both defensive duties and ball progression is paramount for United’s tactical setup.
