Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka has been declared fit for his side’s opening Champions League tie against Atalanta, as manager Mikel Arteta confirmed the player’s availability ahead of the crucial clash. The 22-year-old England international had raised concerns after being forced off late in Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur in the North London derby, but Arteta reassured fans that Saka is ready to play in Thursday’s match against last season’s Europa League winners.
Saka’s return comes as a significant boost for the Gunners, who are targeting success in Europe’s elite competition after a lengthy absence.
Saka Set to Start
Mikel Arteta’s comments regarding Bukayo Saka’s fitness were a welcome relief for Arsenal supporters after the winger had been substituted in the 88th minute against Tottenham.
“Bukayo was able to train today [Wednesday], he completed most of the session, and he is available for tomorrow,” Arteta revealed during his pre-match press conference. This statement suggests that Saka is likely to start in what will be an important test for Arsenal in their first Champions League match since the 2016-17 season.
Saka, who has been in fine form so far this season, will be key to Arsenal’s attacking plans. His pace, creativity, and ability to deliver goals and assists make him a vital component of Arteta’s side. With Arsenal seeking to progress deep into the competition, having a fit Saka will provide a major boost.
Odegaard’s Absence a Blow
While Saka’s return offers good news, Arsenal will have to make do without their influential captain, Martin Odegaard, for the Champions League tie. The Norwegian midfielder sustained an ankle injury during Norway’s Nations League win over Austria and was subsequently ruled out after an MRI scan revealed damage to his ankle ligaments.
Speaking about the injury, Arteta expressed his disappointment at losing Odegaard but remained hopeful that the midfielder would not be sidelined for an extended period. “The scan showed some damage around the ligaments in the ankle, so we are going to miss him,” Arteta said. “It’s something quite significant, so we are going to lose him for a while. Hopefully not months, but he will definitely miss some games.”
Odegaard’s absence will be a blow for Arsenal, given his leadership and creative influence in midfield. The 24-year-old has been pivotal in orchestrating the team’s attacking play, and his absence will force Arteta to make tactical adjustments for the match against Atalanta.
Rice and Calafiori Return
Arsenal’s injury news was not all negative, as fellow midfielder Declan Rice is set to return to action after missing the victory over Tottenham due to suspension. Rice, who has been an important figure since joining Arsenal from West Ham in the summer, will likely slot straight back into the starting lineup for the match in Italy.
Rice’s ability to control the tempo of the game and his defensive solidity will be crucial in what is expected to be a challenging away fixture for Arsenal. Atalanta, known for their high-energy, attacking style, will test the Gunners, and Rice’s presence in midfield will help provide balance.
In addition to Rice, Arsenal will welcome back Italian left-back Riccardo Calafiori, who has recovered from a recent injury.
