Chelsea has announced that 19-year-old Brazilian winger Angelo Gabriel has completed a move to Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr. The youngster, who joined the Blues from São Paulo last summer, departs Stamford Bridge without having made a first-team appearance for the club. Angelo spent the 2023/24 season on loan at Strasbourg in Ligue 1, but his time in London has come to an end as he embarks on a new chapter in the Middle East.

A Promising Start in Brazil

Angelo’s journey to European football began with a breakthrough at São Paulo, where he quickly made a name for himself as one of Brazil’s most promising young talents. His performances in the Brasileirão caught the attention of several top European clubs, but it was Chelsea who secured his signature in the summer of 2023.

A Year in Ligue 1

Following his arrival at Chelsea, Angelo was immediately loaned out to Strasbourg in Ligue 1 for the 2023/24 season. During his time in France, Angelo showed flashes of his potential, contributing with a handful of goals and assists while gaining regular playing time.

Despite his promising moments, Angelo’s season at Strasbourg was a mixed one. While he demonstrated his flair and creativity on the ball, he also faced challenges in consistency and adapting to the rigors of top-flight European football.

A Summer with Chelsea

Angelo returned to Chelsea in the summer of 2024 and was included in the club’s pre-season preparations. There was some excitement among fans to see the Brazilian winger in action for the Blues, especially after his year in France. Angelo featured in a few pre-season matches, where he had the opportunity to impress the coaching staff and make a case for his inclusion in the first team for the upcoming season.

However, despite his efforts, it became clear that breaking into Chelsea’s first team would be a difficult task. With the club boasting a wealth of attacking talent and competition for places intense, Angelo’s path to regular playing time at Stamford Bridge was uncertain.

A New Beginning at Al Nassr

The move to Al Nassr marks a significant change in direction for Angelo’s career. The Saudi Pro League has been rapidly growing in stature, attracting a number of high-profile players from Europe in recent years. Al Nassr, in particular, has emerged as one of the leading clubs in the region, with ambitions of competing at the highest level both domestically and in continental competitions.

For Angelo, this move represents an opportunity to establish himself as a key player in a competitive league while continuing his development in a new environment. At just 19 years old, he still has plenty of time to fulfill the potential that made him such a coveted prospect during his time in Brazil.

Chelsea’s Strategy and Future Plans

From Chelsea’s perspective, the sale of Angelo is in line with the club’s broader strategy of developing young talent and managing a large squad with numerous players on loan or moving to other clubs. The decision to let Angelo leave permanently suggests that the club may have felt he was not ready to make the step up to their first team in the near future, or that the offer from Al Nassr was too good to turn down.
