Brighton vs Nottingham Forest continued their unbeaten Premier League campaigns with a thrilling 2-2 draw at the Amex Stadium, a match that will be remembered as much for its dramatic late moments as for the football itself. Both teams showed attacking intent throughout, resulting in four goals, a frantic pace, and no shortage of excitement for the fans. However, the post-match discussions were dominated by controversy, as Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White and both managers were sent off late in the game.

A Fast-Paced Encounter

From the first whistle, it was clear that both sides were keen to extend their unbeaten runs. Brighton started on the front foot, using their dynamic wide play to stretch Nottingham Forest’s defense. Roberto De Zerbi’s side, known for their pressing and fluid attacking football, created early chances through Solly March and Kaoru Mitoma, testing Forest goalkeeper Matt Turner.

Despite Brighton’s early pressure, it was Nottingham Forest who struck first. In the 15th minute, Forest midfielder Anthony Elanga capitalized on a misplaced pass from Brighton’s midfield, driving forward and slipping the ball to Taiwo Awoniyi, who made no mistake in finishing low past Brighton’s Jason Steele to put Forest 1-0 ahead.

Brighton’s Quick Response

Brighton, unfazed by going behind, responded swiftly. Their equalizer came just seven minutes later when a clever corner routine caught Forest’s defense napping. Pascal Groß, Brighton’s creative force, delivered a perfect ball into the box, and defender Lewis Dunk rose highest to nod the ball into the net, leveling the match at 1-1.

With the momentum now in Brighton’s favor, they pressed on, looking to take the lead before halftime. Their efforts were rewarded in the 38th minute when Joao Pedro latched onto a through ball from Billy Gilmour. The Brazilian forward skipped past his marker and rifled a shot into the top corner, giving Brighton a deserved 2-1 lead going into the break.

Forest Fight Back

Despite trailing, Nottingham Forest came out strong in the second half, determined to avoid defeat. Manager Nuno Espirito Santo made tactical adjustments, bringing on fresh legs in the form of Danilo and Orel Mangala to add energy to the midfield. The change paid off, and Forest’s pressing game started to cause problems for Brighton.

In the 65th minute, Forest found their equalizer. A swift counterattack saw Gibbs-White drive at the heart of Brighton’s defense before threading a perfectly weighted pass to Awoniyi, who coolly slotted home his second goal of the game to bring the score to 2-2.

The game’s tempo remained high, with both sides pushing for a winner. Brighton continued to probe through Mitoma and João Pedro, while Forest’s counterattacks kept the home side’s defense on edge. However, as the match reached its closing stages, the tension began to boil over.

Controversial Red Cards

The pivotal moment of the game came in the 88th minute when Morgan Gibbs-White, already on a yellow card, made a sliding challenge on Brighton’s Joao Pedro. Referee Rob Jones deemed the tackle reckless and immediately brandished a second yellow, sending Gibbs-White off and reducing Forest to 10 men. Forest players and fans alike were furious with the decision, believing the tackle was firm but fair.

Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler was shown a red card for his heated reaction to the tackle, and as tensions escalated further, Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo also saw red after an argument with the fourth official.

Assistant Coaches Speak Out

Nottingham Forest assistant boss Rui Pedro Silva defended Gibbs-White’s tackle, saying, “From my point of view, Morgan’s tackle looked a strong one but a fair one. Of course, the referee has a different point of view — we don’t have to agree, but that’s the decision he made.”

Brighton’s coaching staff, on the other hand, refrained from commenting directly on the referee’s decisions but praised their team’s resilience. “We fought hard, and even with all the drama, we continued to push. It’s disappointing not to come away with the win, but I’m proud of the effort the players showed,” said Brighton’s assistant manager, reflecting on the chaotic finale.
