Republic of Ireland assistant manager John O’Shea has made it clear that he harbors no regrets or lingering thoughts about what could have been had Declan Rice continued to represent the Irish national team. Rice, who now plays for Arsenal and is a key figure for the England national team, made the decision to switch his international allegiance from Ireland to England in 2019, a move that stirred emotions at the time.

The Declan Rice Saga

Declan Rice’s decision to represent England on the international stage after initially playing for Ireland in three friendlies in 2018 sparked debate and disappointment among Irish supporters and players alike. Born in London to Irish grandparents, Rice had been eligible to play for both countries and initially made his international debut for the Republic of Ireland. However, after much consideration, he chose to represent the country of his birth.

Rice’s departure from the Irish camp left a void that many believed would be difficult to fill, given his burgeoning talent. Now an integral part of the Arsenal midfield and a stalwart in Gareth Southgate’s England team, Rice has gone on to achieve significant success, including a runners-up medal at Euro 2020 and a key role in England’s journey to the Euro 2024 final. His performances have cemented his reputation as one of the best midfielders in the world, but his absence from the Ireland team continues to be a topic of discussion.

John O’Shea’s Perspective towards Rice

John O’Shea, who is now assistant to Ireland manager Stephen Kenny, was asked if he ever thinks about what the Irish team might have achieved with Rice still in their ranks. His response was direct and pragmatic.

“No, not at all,” O’Shea replied. “Declan Rice made his decision, and we’ve moved on from that. We have fantastic players here who are fully committed to Ireland, and that’s where our focus is. We have to look forward, not backward.”

O’Shea’s comments highlight a sense of closure on the matter within the Irish camp. Having played alongside Rice during his brief stint with Ireland, O’Shea is well aware of the player’s talents, but he emphasized that Ireland has its own crop of talented players who are capable of making a difference.

The Challenge of Facing England

Saturday’s Nations League clash against England in Dublin will be a significant test for the Republic of Ireland. Facing a team as strong and experienced as England, with players like Rice, Harry Kane, and Jude Bellingham, will undoubtedly pose a challenge. However, O’Shea sees it as an opportunity for his players to showcase their abilities on a big stage.

“Playing against a team like England is always a challenge, but it’s also an opportunity,” O’Shea remarked. “We know we’re up against some of the best players in the world, but we’re ready for it. The lads are excited, and we’ll give it everything.”

The match will also mark a new chapter for England, as they begin life without Gareth Southgate following his resignation after the Euro 2024 final. Interim manager Lee Carsley, who previously led England’s Under-21s to European Championship glory in 2023, will be in charge for the first time, adding another layer of intrigue to the contest.
