Leicester City manager Steve Cooper has expressed his frustration over what he described as “an awful human error” during his team’s 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace last weekend. The incident in question occurred when Jean-Philippe Mateta’s first goal, initially ruled offside, was overturned by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), allowing Palace to claw their way back into the match after Leicester had taken a 2-0 lead.
Cooper has since confirmed that the club has met with Premier League officials to discuss the matter, and while evidence was submitted to support their case, they have yet to receive an apology or official acknowledgment of the error.
Leicester’s Dominant Start and Palace’s Comeback
Leicester’s trip to Selhurst Park began promisingly, with the Foxes displaying dominance throughout the first half. Stephy Mavididi’s brace early in the second half gave Cooper’s side what seemed to be a comfortable 2-0 lead. Mavididi, who has been in sparkling form this season, found the back of the net twice in quick succession, leaving Crystal Palace with a mountain to climb.
Crystal Palace capitalized on a controversial VAR decision that dramatically shifted the momentum. Jean-Philippe Mateta, who had been lurking in Leicester’s defensive third, scored what appeared to be an offside goal.
The VAR Controversy
After a review, the VAR officials overturned the assistant referee’s offside decision and awarded the goal to Crystal Palace, much to the dismay of Leicester’s players and coaching staff. Replays shown to viewers appeared to show Mateta in an offside position, adding to the confusion and anger among Leicester’s contingent.
The controversy only deepened as Mateta went on to score a second goal later in the game, securing a 2-2 draw for Crystal Palace and denying Leicester a crucial win.
Cooper’s Reaction: ‘An Awful Human Error’
In the aftermath of the match, Cooper did not hold back in his criticism of the decision. “It’s an awful human error,” he said in his post-match interview. “We’ve seen the footage, and everyone can see it’s offside. VAR is supposed to eliminate these mistakes, not create them. We’ve gone through the proper channels and have submitted evidence to the Premier League, but we haven’t received an apology.”
Cooper emphasized that while the error directly impacted the result of the match, the larger concern is the integrity of the officiating system. “We’re all for technology improving the game, but when it leads to this kind of confusion and injustice, something needs to change. It’s disappointing not just for us but for the fans who want to see fair play.”
Leicester’s Evidence Submission and Premier League Response
Leicester City took immediate action after the match, compiling evidence that they believe proves Mateta was offside. The club has submitted the evidence to the Premier League in an attempt to gain clarity on the decision, but as of now, they have not received a formal apology or response regarding the matter.
“We’ve shown what we believe to be conclusive evidence, and we hope the Premier League will address this properly,” Cooper stated. “It’s important that we get clarity, not just for our club but for the entire league. These decisions can have serious consequences.”
