Paul Mitchell, Newcastle United’s newly appointed sporting director, has defended his first transfer window at the club after facing challenges in securing top targets. Mitchell, found himself navigating a complex summer transfer market, with the most notable setback being Newcastle’s failure to land Crystal Palace center-back Marc Guehi. Despite submitting several bids for the player, Palace stood firm in their decision not to sell Guehi, forcing Newcastle to explore other options.

Mitchell also failed to secure a Deadline Day move for Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga, adding to the frustration. However, he remains confident in the club’s long-term strategy and insists that Newcastle are still in a strong position to compete this season.

Failed Pursuit of Marc Guehi

Marc Guehi, the highly-rated England international and Crystal Palace center-back, was Newcastle’s top defensive target for the summer of 2024. With Eddie Howe looking to strengthen his squad after securing Champions League football for the upcoming season, Guehi was identified as the perfect fit to bolster the defense alongside Sven Botman and Fabian Schär. Guehi’s composure on the ball, defensive intelligence, and experience in the Premier League made him a prime candidate for Newcastle’s ambitions of becoming a top-four regular.

Newcastle made multiple bids for Marc Guehi throughout the window, with the final offer reaching a reported £65 million, including add-ons. Palace, however, remained resolute, rejecting all offers. The London club, under manager Roy Hodgson, was unwilling to part with one of their most important players, particularly after losing key figures in recent seasons. Guehi’s influence on Palace’s backline was deemed too crucial, and the Eagles refused to budge on their stance, leaving Newcastle frustrated as the transfer window drew to a close.

Deadline Day Move for Anthony Elanga Fails

As the window neared its deadline, and with Guehi’s transfer looking increasingly unlikely, Newcastle shifted their focus to Nottingham Forest’s Anthony Elanga. The young Swedish winger had impressed in his first season at Forest, showcasing his pace, flair, and ability to create chances from wide areas. With Newcastle keen to add depth and versatility to their attacking options, Elanga became a target on Deadline Day.

However, this move also proved difficult, with Nottingham Forest unwilling to sell the player so late in the window. Forest, having only signed Elanga from Manchester United the previous summer, valued his potential and viewed him as a key component of their future plans. Despite Newcastle’s interest and willingness to negotiate, they were unable to complete a deal before the transfer window closed.

Paul Mitchell’s Response and Defense

Paul Mitchell addressed the media to defend his performance and explain the rationale behind Newcastle‘s failed attempts. While acknowledging the frustration of missing out on Guehi and Elanga, Mitchell emphasized the challenges of navigating the current transfer market, especially with clubs increasingly reluctant to sell key players without ample time to find replacements.

“We pursued the players we believed would add the most value to our squad, and while it’s disappointing not to have secured Marc Guehi or Anthony Elanga, these are part of the ups and downs of the transfer business,” Mitchell said. “We made competitive offers that we felt reflected the quality of the players, but ultimately, the selling clubs made their decisions, and we respect that.”

Mitchell also pointed out the evolving nature of football transfers, where Premier League clubs are under less financial pressure to sell, especially when dealing with rival teams. Crystal Palace, for example, had no pressing need to offload Guehi, who still has several years left on his contract. In the case of Elanga, Forest had already reinforced their squad and did not want to weaken it by selling one of their bright talents at the last minute.
