Tottenham Hotspur delivered a commanding performance to secure a 3-0 victory over a disjointed Manchester United at Old Trafford, reinforcing their position as one of the Premier League’s top contenders this season. Brennan Johnson, Dejan Kulusevski, and Dominic Solanke were the scorers for Spurs, who were in control throughout the game, leaving United to reflect on another worrying defeat. Bruno Fernandes’ red card before half-time only added to United’s misery, but the result was never in doubt.

Early Dominance from Tottenham

Tottenham came out with intent, applying pressure from the first whistle. Ange Postecoglou’s men played with a fluidity and confidence that has been their hallmark this season. It didn’t take long for them to break through a fragile Manchester United defense, with Brennan Johnson opening the scoring in the 11th minute after a powerful run from Micky van de Ven.

Van de Ven’s surge from the backline embodied the aggressive, attacking approach Spurs implemented from the outset. His driving run took him past several United players, creating chaos in the home side’s defensive ranks. He delivered a precise pass to Johnson, who coolly slotted the ball into the bottom corner, giving Spurs a deserved lead.

The goal set the tone for the remainder of the first half. Tottenham dominated possession, dictating the pace of the game, while Manchester United struggled to string together meaningful attacks. United’s midfield, led by Casemiro and Christian Eriksen, was outclassed by the dynamic duo of James Maddison and Yves Bissouma, who controlled the tempo and consistently carved out chances for Spurs’ attackers.

Bruno Fernandes’ Red Card

As Tottenham continued to push for a second goal, Manchester United’s task became even more difficult when Bruno Fernandes was sent off in the 38th minute. The Portuguese midfielder’s dismissal came after a reckless challenge on James Maddison, which saw him slide into the Spurs playmaker with excessive force. Though Fernandes slipped in the process, the referee showed no hesitation in brandishing a straight red card.

The decision sparked frustration among United players and fans, but Fernandes’ ill-timed tackle left the referee with little choice. Down to 10 men, Manchester United’s slim chances of a comeback were all but extinguished. The team lacked composure and discipline, and Tottenham capitalized on the numerical advantage.

Kulusevski and Solanke Seal the Deal

Tottenham wasted no time in putting the game beyond Manchester United’s reach in the second half. With the home side struggling to regroup after Fernandes’ sending-off, Spurs picked apart the United defense with ease. In the 52nd minute, Dejan Kulusevski doubled Tottenham’s lead with a clinical finish after a clever assist from Maddison.

Kulusevski’s goal epitomized the gulf in class between the two sides. Tottenham’s passing was sharp and purposeful, while United looked disorganized and unable to cope with the visitors’ relentless pressure. Kulusevski, cutting inside from the right flank, curled a powerful shot into the top corner, leaving United goalkeeper Andre Onana helpless.

As Tottenham continued to dominate, Dominic Solanke added a third goal in the 73rd minute, completing a comfortable afternoon for the North London side. Solanke, who was a constant threat to United’s defense throughout the match, capitalized on a defensive error from Lisandro Martinez, who failed to clear a cross into the box. Solanke pounced on the loose ball and calmly slotted it past Onana to seal the victory.

Manchester United’s Defensive Weaknesses

This defeat highlighted the growing concerns about Manchester United’s defense, which has been vulnerable in recent weeks. Despite having a strong backline on paper, the Red Devils have struggled to maintain organization and discipline under pressure. Micky van de Ven’s driving runs, combined with the creativity of Maddison and Kulusevski, exposed the lack of cohesion between United’s defenders.

Raphaël Varane and Lisandro Martinez, usually a reliable center-back pairing, were overrun by Spurs’ attack. Martinez, in particular, had a difficult afternoon, failing to deal with Solanke’s movement and often being caught out of position. Tottenham’s third goal was the culmination of United’s defensive lapses, with Martinez’s weak clearance falling straight to Solanke’s feet.

In midfield, Casemiro and Eriksen were unable to assert their usual control. Casemiro, was overrun by Spurs’ quick transitions and found himself chasing shadows for much of the game. Eriksen, meanwhile, struggled to impose his creativity, with Tottenham pressing high and limiting his time on the ball.
