Northern Ireland international Corry Evans has signed a short-term contract with League Two club Bradford City, keeping him at the club until January. The 34-year-old midfielder, who has been a free agent since leaving Sunderland at the end of the summer, brings a wealth of experience and leadership to Bradford, having earned 72 caps for his country over the course of his international career.
Evans, well-known for his composure on the ball and defensive acumen, has had an impressive club career that has seen him play for some of England’s most established teams, including Manchester United, Hull City, Blackburn Rovers, and Sunderland. His addition to Bradford City will provide both tactical nous and invaluable leadership in a squad looking to push higher up the League Two table.
A Free Agent After Leaving Sunderland
Evans spent three seasons at Sunderland, where he made 67 appearances and wore the captain’s armband for much of his time at the club. His leadership on the field and experience playing at the Championship level made him a pivotal figure in Sunderland’s dressing room. However, after the 2023/24 season, the two parties decided to part ways, making Evans a free agent for several months before this new opportunity at Bradford City arose.
Evans’ departure from Sunderland marked the end of a notable chapter in his career, one that saw him help the Black Cats navigate the ups and downs of life in the Championship. During his tenure, he was a steadying force in midfield, providing cover for the defense and guiding younger players with his wealth of knowledge and tactical awareness. Now, he is bringing those same qualities to Bradford City, a team currently sitting mid-table in League Two.
Bradford City: A New Challenge
Bradford City currently find themselves in 14th place in League Two, a position they will hope to improve upon in the coming weeks. Under the guidance of manager Graham Alexander, the Bantams are aiming to build consistency and push for a spot in the top half of the table. Alexander was clearly delighted to secure Evans’ signature, recognizing the value of bringing in a player of his experience.
“We’re bringing Corry in on a short-term deal to help us with his experience and quality,” Alexander said on the club’s website. “He’s played at a very high level throughout his career, and we believe he can help us improve in key areas on the pitch. His leadership will also be important in the dressing room as we push forward.”
For Bradford, signing a player with Evans’ pedigree is seen as a coup. The former Blackburn Rovers and Hull City midfielder has played over 200 games at the Championship level and also featured in the Premier League with Hull. Evans’ wealth of experience across England’s football pyramid could be just what Bradford needs to turn their season around and climb the table.
Evan’s Football Journey
Evans’ football journey began in the Manchester United academy, where he came through the ranks alongside some of the best young talents in English football. Although he didn’t break into the United first team, his time at the club laid a strong foundation for his professional career. He made his name in the Championship and Premier League with Hull City, helping the Tigers achieve promotion to the top flight.
His longest stint came at Blackburn Rovers, where he played over 200 matches across seven seasons. Evans became a fan favorite at Ewood Park for his consistent performances and work rate, and his ability to break up opposition attacks made him a key part of Blackburn’s midfield during his time at the club.
Internationally, Evans has been a key player for Northern Ireland for over a decade, earning 72 caps for his country. He has represented Northern Ireland in major tournaments, including Euro 2016, where his side famously reached the knockout stages. His experience at both club and international levels will undoubtedly be a huge asset to Bradford City, particularly as they look to shore up their defense and bring more stability to their midfield.
