In the fiercely competitive world of international badminton, maintaining peak performance and mental sharpness is a constant challenge. For Malaysia’s world Nо. 3 mіxеd doubles раіr, Soon Huat and Shevon, a tіmеlу ѕраrk wаѕ rеіgnіtеd during thе сеntrаlіѕеd training camp hеld at thе Academy Bаdmіntоn Mаlауѕіа (ABM), in preparation for thе prestigious Sudirman Cuр 2025.
Running from April 14 to April 23, the 10-day training program brought together more than 50 of Malaysia’s top national players. It created a vibrant, focused environment where shuttlers not only pushed their physical limits but also reconnected with the spirit of teamwork and national pride.
For Soon Huat and Shevon, who have been competing as independent players since leaving the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) in 2021, the camp offered more than just practice sessions. It was a refreshing reunion with the national community — one that provided both professional rejuvenation and a deep emotional boost.
Soon Huat and Shevon Returning to Familiar Grounds with a New Perspective
Training at ABM, equipped with its state-of-the-art 16-court hall and modern gymnasium, felt like stepping into a well-known but reinvigorated world for the pair.
“The environment was just so lively every day,” Shevon recalled warmly.
“Going back to the national training centre, where we spent years honing our skills, felt both nostalgic and motivating. We trained alongside both senior and junior players, and that youthful energy around us was really contagious.”
Despite having forged their own path independently, Soon Huat and Shevon appreciated the discipline, camaraderie, and competition that being part of a larger group reignited in them. Unlike the solitude that often accompanies independent training, here they found themselves pushing harder, smiling wider, and laughing more often — crucial elements in any athlete’s mental game.
An Essential Boost Before Battle
The timing of the camp couldn’t have been more perfect. Preparing for an event as demanding as the Sudirman Cup — a biennial mixed-team world championship — requires more than just technical preparation; it demands psychological resilience and sharp adaptability.
Training alongside Malaysia’s best, witnessing teammates overcome struggles, and collectively preparing for battle helped Soon Huat and Shevon rebuild their internal drive.
“Mixing with the younger pairs especially gave us fresh perspectives,” Shevon said.
“There’s something about seeing their raw enthusiasm and hunger that reminds you why you started playing in the first place.”
The intensive sessions included tactical drills, match simulations, physical conditioning, and mental preparation. All aimed at ensuring the players would be at their absolute best when the tournament began.
A Confident Start at the Sudirman Cup for and Shevon Huat and Shevon
Cаrrуіng thе positive energy frоm thе саmр, Sооn Huat and Shevon ѕtерреd onto thе соurtѕ for Mаlауѕіа’ѕ opening tіе against Frаnсе wіth renewed confidence аnd роіѕе. Fасіng Frеnсh раіr Grеgоіrе Dеѕсhаmр аnd Elsa Jacob, they displayed dominance, сlіnсhіng a straight-game victory 21-7, 21-19.
By the time their match began, Malaysia had already secured an unassailable 4-0 lead. Lifting the pressure off the mixed doubles specialists and allowing them to focus on their individual performance without the burden of results.
“Our teammates had already secured the tie, and that allowed us to concentrate purely on finding our rhythm,” Shevon explained.
“We used the match to adjust to the court conditions, get comfortable with the shuttle speeds, and build our momentum for the upcoming ties.”
The commanding performance was not just about winning a point for Malaysia. It was a personal statement — proof that they had reignited their form at the right moment.
Looking Ahead: A Journey Fueled by Passion
For Soon Huat and Shevon, the road ahead is still filled with challenges. As independent players, they shoulder the burdens of scheduling, sponsorship, and logistics largely on their own. However, what they have gained through this journey is invaluable. A deeper connection to their sport and a profound sense of self-reliance.
The rejuvenation experienced at the ABM camp was a reminder that. Even as independents, they remain an integral part of Malaysia’s badminton heartbeat.
As the Sudirman Cup unfolds, Soon Huat and Shevon aim not just to win matches but to inspire. Their story is one of perseverance, adaptability, and an enduring love for badminton.
With renewed energy, unwаvеrіng fосuѕ, and the ѕuрроrt оf thеіr teammates аnd fans. Goh Sооn Huat and Shеvоn Lai аrе rеаdу tо shine brіght — not juѕt fоr themselves, but for their nation.
