Chelsea’s 0-2 defeat against Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Sunday, May 11, 2025, has further ignited the fierce competition for the top five spots in the Premier League standings.

Goals from Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes sealed a crucial victory for the Magpies, pushing Chelsea into a precarious position as they now face an uphill battle in the remaining two fixtures of the season. The Blues must secure back-to-back wins to protect their ambitions of finishing within the coveted top five.

This loss came at a particularly costly moment for Chelsea, who had been handed a golden opportunity to close the gap on third-placed Manchester City, after the Cityzens stumbled to a 1-1 draw against Southampton the day before. However, Chelsea’s sluggish start, compounded by a costly red card for Nicolas Jackson in the 35th minute, completely derailed their hopes.

Now, with only two matches remaining, manager Enzo Maresca and his squad find themselves in a must-win scenario. Chelsea currently sit in sixth place with 64 points, trailing Newcastle (66 points) and Manchester City (65 points). Their task is clear — victories over Manchester United and Nottingham Forest are imperative to keep their European dreams alive.

Failure to do so could see them overtaken not only by Aston Villa (63 points) but also by Nottingham Forest (62 points), who are still eyeing a potential spot in the Conference League.

Intensified Race at the Top

Chelsea’s setback has left them clinging to a slim one-point advantage over Aston Villa and just two points ahead of Nottingham Forest. Newcastle, benefiting from a superior goal difference of +23, are now firmly on course for Champions League qualification, needing only one more win to mathematically secure their place.

Manchester City, with a goal difference of +24, remain in a strong position and require just four points from their remaining two matches to lock in a top-five finish.

Aston Villa still harbor slim hopes of catching Newcastle, but with a significantly inferior goal difference (+7 compared to Newcastle’s +23), the odds are heavily stacked against them. Realistically, Villa will be focusing on overtaking Chelsea for fifth place, a battle that is shaping up to be a thrilling fight until the very last day.

Nottingham Forest, currently sitting seventh, have kept their slim hopes alive. Their path to the top five, however, is narrow, requiring them to defeat Chelsea in the final game and hope either Aston Villa or Chelsea themselves drop valuable points elsewhere.

Chelsea’s Defining Fixtures Loom Large

Chelsea’s final two games will be anything but straightforward. They welcome Manchester United to Stamford Bridge on Saturday, May 17, 2025, before facing a potentially decisive showdown against Nottingham Forest away from home on the last matchday.

Two victories would all but guarantee Chelsea fifth place, thanks to their relatively healthier goal difference over Villa. Nevertheless, if Villa stumbles in either of their remaining matches against Manchester United and Tottenham, Chelsea could potentially secure fifth even with just four points from their two fixtures.

The stakes will be particularly high in the clash against Forest, who will also be desperate for maximum points to stay in the hunt for European football via the Conference League.

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca is well aware of the gravity of the situation. “We have no other choice but to win both games. The players must respond after the underwhelming performance at Newcastle. The next two matches will test our character and determination,” he emphasized.

Newcastle and Manchester City Set Sights on Champions League Berths

For Newcastle, a single victory from their two remaining fixtures, which includes a challenging visit to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, would be sufficient to secure a Champions League berth. Given their impressive goal difference, even a draw might be enough to confirm their top-four finish.

Meanwhile, Manchester City, with a game in hand against Bournemouth, only need four points to mathematically cement their position in the top five. However, if Aston Villa falter in their next games, City might need just one win, with their superior goal difference potentially serving as the deciding factor in a tight finish.

As for Arsenal, already assured of finishing second, they might opt to rest key players in their clash against Newcastle — a potential advantage for the Magpies as they look to solidify their Champions League aspirations.
