SBOTOP: Spurs Set Sights on Kevin Durant in Potential Trade Deal

As the 2025 NBA offseason approaches, the San Antonio Spurs are emerging as a team to watch in the trade market, with Phoenix Suns superstar Kevin Durant reportedly on their radar. According to NBA insider Shams Charania of ESPN, there has been mutual interest between the Spurs and Durant since the February trade deadline — and that communication has continued into the offseason.

Durant-to-Spurs Rumors Heating Up as Offseason Looms

The Spurs, equipped with a wealth of trade assets, are positioning themselves as a major player in the upcoming summer. The franchise is seeking to accelerate its rebuild around generational talent Victor Wembanyama, and acquiring a veteran superstar like Durant could be the move that takes San Antonio to the next level.

Charania stated on The Pat McAfee Show that the Spurs are one of the few teams with enough capital to make a significant deal happen.

“They have a ton of assets,” Charania said. “They’ve got tradable contracts, the No. 2 and No. 14 picks in this year’s NBA Draft, and an abundance of future first-round picks. Whether it’s someone like Giannis Antetokounmpo or Kevin Durant — the Spurs are a team to keep an eye on.”

Although Giannis Antetokounmpo was previously linked with a move to San Antonio, recent reports suggest that such a deal is unlikely, as Giannis has shown a preference for other destinations. This development only strengthens the speculation surrounding Durant.

NBA’s “Craziest Summer Ever”?

Shams further hinted that the 2025 offseason could be one of the wildest in recent memory — perhaps even more eventful than any in the past decade. With the Suns looking to recalibrate and the Spurs eager to surround Wembanyama with elite talent, the conditions for a blockbuster deal are ideal.

“There was a mutual interest between the Spurs and Kevin Durant at the trade deadline,” Charania added. “I expect them to be aggressive this summer in pursuit of a top-tier wing who can elevate their trajectory.”

Durant, who is still performing at a high level despite turning 37 before the new season begins, remains one of the league’s most feared scorers. Pairing him with Wembanyama could drastically shift the Spurs’ competitive timeline.

What Kevin Durant Brings to the Table

Despite his age and some recent injury issues, Durant is still an elite offensive force. During the 2024–25 NBA season, he averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game — numbers good enough to earn him his 15th All-Star selection. He shot an efficient 53% from the field and 43% from beyond the arc, proving he remains one of the most efficient scorers in the league.

However, health concerns linger. Over the last seven seasons, Durant has only managed to play more than 65 games once. Any team trading for him will have to weigh the risk of availability against the reward of his impact on the court.

Spurs Could Offer Draft Picks and Young Talent

From a trade value perspective, the Spurs are well-equipped to make a compelling offer. With two lottery picks in the 2025 NBA Draft and several future first-round selections, they have the ammunition to meet the Suns’ reported asking price — multiple first-round picks for Durant.

If the trade were to happen, it would also be a dream come true for Victor Wembanyama, who has publicly admired Durant since his youth. The chance to play alongside his idol could fast-track Wemby’s development and put San Antonio back in the playoff mix.

What’s Next for Durant and the Spurs?

As the NBA offseason nears, all eyes will be on the Spurs and Suns. Will San Antonio push all their chips to land a marquee veteran? Or will Durant stay put in Phoenix for one more run?

While nothing is certain yet, one thing is clear: the Spurs are ready to make a big move. And if Kevin Durant is indeed available, San Antonio could be his next — and possibly final — NBA chapter.
