Fulham’s dynamic defender Calvin Bassey is entering the 2025/26 season with a determined mindset and a clear vision: to help lead his side deep into the UEFA Europa League while continuing his development under head coach Marco Silva. In an exclusive sit-down, Bassey shared his insights on his European ambitions, his growth at Fulham, and the formative experiences he gained from his time at Ajax and Rangers.

A New Chapter with Fulham

Bassey joined Fulham in the summer of 2023, making a much-anticipated move back to the Premier League after a challenging but valuable spell in the Eredivisie with Ajax. The Nigeria international has since become a crucial part of Fulham’s defensive setup, blending physicality, tactical intelligence, and versatility.

“Coming to Fulham felt like the right step at the right time,” Bassey said. “I was looking for a place to settle, to grow, and to be trusted with responsibility. Marco Silva made that easy for me. From the first conversation, I felt his belief.”

Learning Under Marco Silva

Marco Silva’s coaching has played a key role in Bassey’s progression. Known for his tactical structure and ability to get the best out of players, Silva has transformed Fulham into a disciplined, enterprising side capable of taking on the Premier League’s top clubs.

“The gaffer has a great way of breaking things down. He’s very clear on what he wants from us defensively and how he wants us to contribute in possession,” Bassey explained. “He encourages us to express ourselves but within a strong framework. That balance has helped me develop massively.”

Bassey credits Silva not just for improving his reading of the game but also for demanding consistency.

“At this level, one mistake can cost you. Coach Silva hammers on concentration and communication. It’s not just about athleticism—he’s teaching me the mental side of defending.”

Europa League Ambitions

With Fulham qualifying for the Europa League through their top-seven finish in the Premier League last season, expectations are mounting. For Bassey, the tournament is more than just a side challenge—it’s personal.

“European football is special. The atmosphere, the travel, the variety of playing styles—it all forces you to adapt,” he said. “We know it’s not going to be easy, but this squad is hungry. We’re not just in it to participate. We want to compete. We want to go far.”

Fulham’s group includes tricky fixtures against clubs like Real Betis, SC Freiburg, and Red Star Belgrade—teams with strong European pedigrees.

“It’s a tough group, but we’ve shown we can go toe-to-toe with quality sides. What we need is focus, especially away from home. European nights are unpredictable. But with the quality in this team and the tactical guidance we get, we believe in ourselves.”

Ajax A Lesson in Discipline

Before joining Fulham, Bassey spent a single season at Ajax after a high-profile move from Rangers. While the Dutch giants didn’t achieve their usual dominance during his tenure, Bassey reflects on the experience as invaluable.

“At Ajax, everything is about detail. Positioning, movement, anticipation—it’s all drilled into you,” he said. “I had to adjust to a new football culture, and that helped me mature. Even though things didn’t go as well as I’d hoped team-wise, I came out stronger.”

Bassey spoke highly of Ajax’s emphasis on tactical awareness and the pressure of playing for a club with sky-high expectations.

“There’s no hiding at Ajax. Every game, every training session, there’s pressure to perform. It sharpens you. You learn to think quicker, move smarter.”

The Rangers Revolution

Bassey first gained international recognition during his time at Rangers, where he was instrumental in their 2021/22 run to the Europa League final. That season saw Bassey emerge as one of Europe’s most exciting young defenders.

“Rangers gave me my breakthrough. The fans, the coaching staff, the culture—it was all special. Playing at Ibrox in European nights is something I’ll never forget,” he said, with a smile.

Under then-manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Bassey evolved from a promising full-back into a formidable centre-half, impressing with his strength, pace, and commitment.

“Gio trusted me. He challenged me to take on more responsibility. I grew a lot that season, not just technically but mentally. That final against Frankfurt still hurts, but it taught me so much about handling pressure.”

Playing for Nigeria Pride and Progression

Though born in Italy and raised in England, Bassey represents Nigeria at the international level. He debuted for the Super Eagles in 2022 and has since become a regular presence in the national setup.

“Playing for Nigeria is an honor. Every time I pull on the shirt, it’s about more than just football. It’s about family, heritage, pride. The support from the fans is incredible.”

Bassey has featured in key World Cup qualifiers and Africa Cup of Nations campaigns, including a standout performance against Egypt in the 2023 AFCON group stage.

“The international experience pushes me in different ways. African football is intense, physical, emotional. It’s made me tougher and more adaptable.”

Fulham’s Locker Room Culture

One of the reasons Bassey has settled quickly at Fulham is the positive locker room environment. Led by captain Tom Cairney and senior figures like Andreas Pereira and João Palhinha, the squad is unified and focused.

“It’s a good vibe. We push each other but also support each other. There’s a sense of accountability here. Everyone wants to improve.”

Bassey also noted the role of camaraderie in facing adversity.

“When we’ve had bad results, no one points fingers. We come together, watch the clips, fix the issues, and move forward. That mentality will be key in Europe.”

Mental Health and Resilience

Bassey has also been candid about the pressures of professional football. From social media scrutiny to on-field criticism, he acknowledges the need for mental strength.

“You’re in the spotlight a lot, and people forget you’re human. I’ve learned to block out the noise, focus on the process, and lean on people I trust.”

He credits Fulham’s support staff for creating an environment where mental wellness is prioritized.

“We’ve got people to talk to, sessions to reset mentally—it’s important. Staying sharp mentally is as crucial as your physical training.”
