Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has publicly apologized to the club’s supporters following the shocking Carabao Cup elimination at the hands of lower-league side Grimsby Town. The Portuguese tactician admitted that fans of the Red Devils did not deserve to witness such a disappointing performance and result.
The stunning upset took place in the midweek Carabao Cup clash, where Manchester United were expected to cruise to victory. Instead, they suffered one of the most embarrassing defeats in recent years, being knocked out on penalties after a dramatic 2-2 draw.
United’s Painful Defeat Against Grimsby Town
The Red Devils were caught off guard early in the game, finding themselves 2-0 down by halftime. While Amorim’s men showed some spirit in the second half, clawing their way back to make it 2-2, the momentum failed to carry through to the shootout.
The penalty drama ended in heartbreak as United were defeated 12-11 in a marathon shootout, officially ending their Carabao Cup campaign far earlier than anticipated.
Following the match, Ruben Amorim addressed the media and issued a heartfelt apology:
“I only want to say sorry to our fans because I really have nothing else to discuss regarding our performance. They did not deserve this kind of disappointment.”
A Performance That Fell Below Expectations
Amorim did not hold back in expressing his frustration with the level of play his squad displayed on the night. He acknowledged that while the team has shown signs of growth in recent matches, particularly during preseason and in competitive games like the one against Arsenal, the lack of consistency in crucial fixtures remains a major issue.
“Since preseason, or even when we faced Arsenal, you could see clear improvements in our style of play. But when it mattered most, in a game like this, we simply started very poorly and could not recover fully,” Amorim explained.
The manager emphasized that these lapses in concentration and lack of sharpness cannot continue if United want to compete seriously across all competitions this season.
Repeated Apologies and Promise of Improvement
For Amorim, the Grimsby defeat was more than just a cup exit—it was a wake-up call. Once again, he reiterated his remorse towards the supporters, promising to work tirelessly on fixing the problems within the squad.
“I sincerely apologize to our fans once again. They expect much better from us, and rightly so. We must reflect, learn, and focus on the next challenge,” he added.
The Portuguese coach highlighted that changes will be made quickly to ensure such a collapse does not repeat itself.
Focus Shifts to Burnley in the Premier League
With the Carabao Cup disappointment behind them, Manchester United will now turn their attention to the Premier League. The Red Devils are set to face Burnley on Saturday, August 30, 2025, in what is now seen as a crucial game to restore confidence before the international break.
Amorim stressed the importance of regrouping mentally and physically ahead of that fixture, underlining that United must show the fans a strong reaction on the pitch.
The Burnley clash will serve as both a test of resilience and an opportunity for Manchester United to bounce back swiftly from their Carabao Cup nightmare.
