Malaysia’s preparations for the upcoming Badminton World Championships in Paris have hit an unexpected setback after promising debutant Arif Junaidi was struck by illness just days before the tournament begins on August 25, 2025.

Thе 23-year-old mеn’ѕ dоublеѕ ѕhuttlеr, whо rесеntlу fоrgеd a ѕtrоng раrtnеrѕhір wіth Yар Rоу Kіng, wаѕ fоrсеd tо mіѕѕ Mоndау’ѕ trаіnіng ѕеѕѕіоn due tо fеvеr аnd extreme fаtіguе. While he returned to the court on Tuesday (August 19), his fitness level remains a concern for the national coaching staff.

National coach Herry IP confirmed the situation during a training session at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM).

“Arif had fever and flu symptoms, which is why he could not train on Monday,” explained Herry. “He tried to come back today, but he was only able to finish two of the scheduled training programs. Clearly, he is not yet at full strength, but we are hoping he can recover by tomorrow.”

Malaysia’s Men’s Doubles Line-up in Paris

Mаlауѕіа wіll send four mеn’ѕ doubles раіrѕ to the рrеѕtіgіоuѕ event іn Paris, showcasing thе nаtіоn’ѕ dерth іn thе discipline. Leading the charge are world No. 2 Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, the reigning 2022 world champions from Tokyo and Malaysia’s biggest hope for another historic triumph.

Meanwhile, the world No. 22 pair of Arif Junaidi and Yap Roy King are making their long-awaited World Championships debut after showing strong progress in recent months.

However, Arif’s sudden illness has cast doubts over their readiness, especially with their opening match looming against Japan’s world No. 34 duo Kenya Mitsuhashi and Hiroki Okamura.

Coaches Concerned But Hopeful

When asked if Arif’s condition could jeopardize Malaysia’s medal prospects, Herry admitted that there is cause for concern.

“If you ask me whether I’m worried, the answer is yes,” Herry said. “But seeing him step back on court today, I still believe he will be able to play. The priority now is ensuring his quick recovery. At this level, the margins are razor-thin — physical fitness and mental resilience make the difference. That’s why Arif’s health is absolutely crucial.”

A Rising Pair With High Expectations

Arif and Roy King enter the World Championships in excellent form, having recently secured their first-ever BWF World Tour title at the Macau Open earlier this month. Their breakthrough victory established them as one of the most exciting young pairs in Malaysian badminton, fueling optimism that they could make a strong impact on their World Championships debut.

Unfortunately, Arif’s illness has placed an unexpected obstacle in their path. While the countdown to Paris continues, questions remain over whether the duo can perform at their best when it matters most.

Malaysia’s Medal Hopes Rest on Multiple Pairs

Despite this setback, Malaysia remains a strong contender for the men’s doubles crown. With Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik spearheading the nation’s challenge and other top-ranked pairs ready to step up, Malaysia boasts one of the deepest line-ups in the tournament.

Yet, much of the spotlight will fall on Arif and Roy King. Their ability to overcome adversity and deliver a strong performance on their debut could define Malaysia’s campaign in Paris.

As the tournament edges closer, the nation waits anxiously to see whether Arif Junaidi’s recovery will be fast enough to save his World Championships dream — and potentially mark the start of a new chapter in Malaysian badminton.
