Liverpool manager Arne Slot has stepped up to defend his bold decision to rotate ten players in the team’s humiliating 0–3 defeat to Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup. Despite the heavy loss at Anfield, Slot insisted that he had no regrets, emphasizing that the club is currently dealing with a serious squad depth issue.
The result sent Liverpool crashing out of the competition early, a setback that raised eyebrows among fans and pundits alike. Many questioned why Slot decided to rest almost all of his key players, including Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, Florian Wirtz, and Dominik Szoboszlai, none of whom were even named on the substitutes’ bench.
But for Slot, it was a calculated risk—a necessary one given the Reds’ physically demanding fixture list and mounting fatigue among players.
A Conscious Decision in the Carabao Cup
Arne Slot admitted that rotating ten players in one match was risky, but he explained it was a deliberate and strategic choice. According to him, Liverpool’s schedule left him with no other option.
The Dutch manager reminded everyone that the Reds are facing a crucial stretch of fixtures against Aston Villa, Real Madrid, and Manchester City—three high-intensity matches that could define their season across multiple competitions.
“It was the same kind of decision I made in this stage of the tournament last season,” Slot explained.
“There are many reasons behind our recent run of six defeats in seven matches, but fatigue and squad limitations are definitely among them.”
Signs of Fatigue Within the Squad
Slot openly acknowledged that his team has been struggling physically, especially after a congested schedule. He pointed to Liverpool’s 2–3 defeat to Brentford as an example of how the players have been showing signs of exhaustion.
That loss came just two days after Liverpool’s away trip to Eintracht Frankfurt, and Slot admitted that his squad isn’t yet equipped to handle three competitive matches in one week at the required intensity.
“If I look at our performance against Brentford, just 48 hours after we played away in Frankfurt, I could see a team struggling to cope with that level of frequency,” he said.
“This is a new challenge for many of our players—to perform consistently at Premier League and Champions League level three times a week.”
Avoiding the Injury Trap
Another major reason behind Slot’s heavy rotation is injury prevention. The Liverpool boss revealed that he still carries “trauma” from past experiences where players were pushed too early into congested schedules and ended up injured.
He cited Alexander Isak and Giovanni Leoni as examples—two players who suffered setbacks after being risked in tight fixture runs.
“The last time I played someone who we thought was ready for such a schedule, it was Alexander Isak—and he got injured,” Slot recalled.
“When we faced Southampton, Giovanni Leoni also picked up an injury in a similar kind of match.”
These incidents, according to Slot, shaped his cautious approach toward squad rotation this season.
Only 15 Players Truly Available
Slot didn’t mince words when explaining Liverpool’s current crisis. He revealed that the club effectively has only 15 fit senior players available for selection—forcing him to rely on academy players in competitions like the Carabao Cup.
The manager also reminded critics that Liverpool have a long-standing tradition of using domestic cup competitions as a testing ground for young talents. Even so, Slot added a subtle but telling remark—suggesting that even his strongest lineup might not have changed the outcome.
“Right now, we have only 15 or 16 players truly available,” Slot concluded.
“That’s why I felt it was the right decision. I don’t regret it, even after the result, because honestly, even with our regular starters, I’m not sure we would have beaten Palace tonight.”
Liverpool’s Struggles Continue
The defeat to Crystal Palace adds another chapter to what has become a difficult run for Liverpool under Arne Slot. The team has now lost six of their last seven matches in all competitions, with growing pressure from supporters and media questioning whether the Dutch coach can steady the ship.
Despite the storm, Slot remains composed and insists that Liverpool’s current issues are temporary growing pains. His focus, he says, is on rebuilding the squad’s confidence, fitness, and unity before the season’s most decisive stretch.
