Liverpool manager Arne Slot has openly acknowledged the profound impact of Diogo Jota’s tragic death on the club, both on and off the pitch. However, the Dutch coach emphasized that the heartbreaking incident will never be used as an excuse for the team’s dip in form.

Jota, along with his brother Andre Silva, tragically lost their lives in a car accident in Zamora, Spain, in July. The news sent shockwaves across the football world, and the grief was deeply felt by Liverpool teammates and supporters alike.

The Reds’ squad has been profoundly affected by the loss, with players like Andy Robertson sharing emotional reflections after helping Scotland secure a spot at the 2026 World Cup. Despite the collective mourning, Slot has remained focused on maintaining the team’s concentration amid a packed fixture schedule and the fierce competition of the Premier League.

Acknowledging the Loss, But Staying Focused

Although recent results have been far from ideal, Slot is adamant that Liverpool should not fall into the narrative of using grief as a rationale for poor performances. The priority now, he says, is to regain rhythm on the pitch and push forward through the remainder of the season.

“The news about Diogo shocked all of us, and of course it’s emotional—completely normal,” Slot commented. “I think a lot about how this affects his wife and children. For them, the loss is infinitely harder than for anyone in the team. But there’s no doubt that we miss him—not just as a player, but as a person.”

Remembering Jota’s Contributions

Slot also highlighted the vital role Jota played in key moments for Liverpool. One notable instance came last season against Nottingham Forest, when Jota equalized just a minute after the team fell behind, showcasing his impact and instinctive play.

“Against Nottingham Forest last season, we went 1-0 down, and within a minute he scored the equalizer. Moments like that reflect his character and the type of player he was,” Slot recalled.

Tragedy Doesn’t Explain Liverpool’s Recent Dip

Liverpool are currently navigating a challenging period in the Premier League, having lost five of their last six matches—a tally higher than their total defeats throughout last season’s title-winning campaign. Before this slump, the Reds had lost only five times in 49 league matches, prompting questions about whether the grief surrounding Jota’s death might be affecting performances.

Slot firmly dismissed the idea of linking the tragedy to results. “There’s no way to measure the effect this situation has had on the players or the outcomes,” he said. “The last thing I would ever do is use it as an excuse. Of course, we miss Diogo—100 percent—but I can’t quantify how it has affected results.”

He added, “It’s impossible to determine, and we will never use it as a reason. Our focus must remain on the work we do and trying to win football matches.”

Looking Ahead

As Liverpool strive to recover form in the Premier League, Slot insists the squad’s focus must remain on each game, relying on discipline, teamwork, and tactical execution to navigate the challenges of the season—honoring the memory of Diogo Jota through dedication rather than excuses.
