Gennaro Gattuso has finally revealed the secret behind his approach to managing the Italian national team. Rather than reinventing the wheel with complex new methods, the former AC Milan midfielder has chosen a more straightforward path: learning from the best.
In an honest and candid admission, Gattuso acknowledged that he is essentially “copying” the legendary Marcello Lippi, the coach who led him to World Cup glory in 2006. Lippi remains a key influence and role model for Gattuso, who believes that replicating his mentor’s methods can restore the winning mentality in Gli Azzurri.
Gattuso’s approach isn’t just tactical; it focuses on building strong bonds and trust within the squad, aiming to foster a cohesive team environment. He also stressed that he has personally evolved — no longer the fiery “bad boy” on the pitch, he is now a calmer, more composed leader on the sidelines.
Copying Lippi: A Tried-and-Tested Formula
For Gattuso, Lippi represents the pinnacle of coaching excellence. The 2006 World Cup triumph in Germany stands as undeniable proof of the mentor’s tactical brilliance and ability to unite a squad.
“I’ve basically done a copy-and-paste of what he did when I took over Italy,” Gattuso told Vivo Azzurro.
However, he emphasizes that success is not only about what happens on the pitch. The psychological aspect and honest communication with players are equally crucial.
“Honesty and coherence — that’s the only way to build a real group. Give your players extra trust when they’re struggling,” he added.
This personalized approach is at the heart of Gattuso’s philosophy. Reinstilling a sense of ownership and pride in the national team is his top priority.
“Making players feel that the team belongs to them… Lippi was the master at that,” Gattuso praised.
A World Cup Obsession
Beyond tactics and team management, Gattuso has set a clear and ambitious goal: returning Italy to the World Cup stage. Missing the previous edition was a bitter disappointment he is determined to rectify.
“My obsession is to go to the World Cup, to get back to where we’ve been for years, even as protagonists,” he declared.
He is instilling a resilient mentality in his squad, making it clear that giving up after the first setback is not an option.
“We must want it at all costs and never let fear take over after the first difficulty,” Gattuso explained.
The “New Gattuso” Emerges
Interestingly, Gattuso claims that he has personally evolved as well. He recognizes that the role of a coach is vastly different from that of an impulsive player.
“I am the new Gattuso now. I must be the first to project calm and minimize non-technical mistakes,” he admitted.
The responsibility is enormous, but Gattuso has been molded by pressure since a young age.
“I’ve carried a lot of responsibility, even since I was 12 when I went to Perugia,” he recalled.
It is this lifelong pressure that has shaped his character and determination. Gattuso is committed to bringing joy and pride to all of Italy through his team.
“I hope to give my best alongside my players and bring immense joy to the whole country,” he concluded.
