Sergio Ramos, the legendary Spanish defender, has officially parted ways with CF Monterrey after an impressive stint in Mexico, sparking intense speculation about his next move. Even at 39 years old, Ramos demonstrated his enduring quality and leadership on the pitch, proving that age is no barrier to performance.
Ramos Shines at Monterrey Despite Being at Career’s End
Since joining Monterrey in February 2025, Ramos featured in 32 matches and remarkably scored seven goals—an impressive feat for a central defender. His performances helped stabilize the club’s defense and added a commanding presence that made him a standout figure in Liga MX.
Ramos played his final match for Monterrey on 7 December 2025, in the Liga MX playoff semi-final loss against Toluca. After the defeat, he openly confirmed that his journey in Mexico had come to an end.
The decision to leave Monterrey has fueled speculation about his future, particularly reports suggesting he is seeking one last challenge in European football, aiming to close out his illustrious career in a highly competitive environment.
Manchester United Ready to Offer Contract
Reports from Spain indicate that Manchester United have acted swiftly following Ramos’ departure announcement. The Premier League giants are said to have prepared a formal contract offer to secure the legendary defender on a free transfer.
According to Cadena SER, as reported by Fichajes, Ramos prioritizes returning to Europe before retirement, and United sees an opportunity to bring in a veteran presence in defense. While negotiations are still in the early stages and no agreement has been finalized, Manchester United is reportedly leading the race by approaching Ramos quickly and officially.
Sources suggest that United is attracted by Ramos’ experience, leadership, and resilience, all of which remain evident despite his age. The defender is reportedly considering multiple options for the final chapter of his career.
Not the First Time United Tried to Sign Ramos
This is not the first time Manchester United has pursued Ramos. Back in 2015, United entered advanced talks with Real Madrid to bring him to Old Trafford.
At that time, Sky Sports reported that United offered £28.6 million to secure the Spanish international. Ramos seriously considered the move but ultimately chose to sign a new five-year contract with Real Madrid.
In a 2023 interview with The Mirror, Ramos reflected on that period, stating:
“I remained where I was meant to be, at Real Madrid, but I did come close to playing for United. It didn’t happen, but I’ve always admired the club, the Premier League, and its players. The pace of play there is different, and it’s a league where everyone can learn a lot.”
United’s Continued Interest in 2023
Manchester United made another attempt to sign Ramos in 2023, reportedly offering around £73,000 per week. However, The Sun reported that Ramos rejected the proposal outright, and the speed of his decision reportedly surprised the United executives.
Now, with Ramos available as a free agent and still showing the capacity to compete at a high level, Manchester United has the chance to add a decorated, experienced leader to their backline—a move that could benefit both the club and Ramos as he seeks to conclude his legendary career on a high note.
