Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has offered a revealing glimpse into his long-term future, admitting he would like to experience playing in either Spain or Italy once his time at Old Trafford comes to an end. The Portuguese midfielder, widely regarded as one of United’s most influential figures in recent seasons, stressed that while his focus remains firmly on the present, he is open to new challenges later in his career.

Fernandes is currently under contract with Manchester United until June 2027. Despite attracting serious interest from Saudi Pro League giants Al Hilal during the summer of 2025, the 31-year-old opted to remain in England, reaffirming his commitment to the club during a turbulent rebuilding phase.

Commitment to Manchester United Remains Firm

Speaking in a two-part interview with Portuguese television channel Canal 11, Fernandes emphasized that loyalty and mutual trust remain central to his career philosophy. As long as Manchester United continue to believe in him, he has no intention of forcing a departure.

“I have always said that I want to stay at a club as long as I feel truly wanted,” Fernandes explained. “The moment I feel I’m no longer wanted 100 percent, that’s when I will speak to the club and say I want to leave.”

The United captain reiterated that honesty will guide any future decision. Rather than allowing uncertainty to linger, Fernandes believes in open dialogue with club leadership when the time comes.

La Liga and Serie A: The Dream Destinations

While avoiding any immediate speculation, Fernandes openly named two leagues he would like to experience before retiring: La Liga and Serie A. Both competitions, he believes, offer unique tactical challenges and cultural appeal.

“I would like to try playing in Spain because I’ve never played there,” he said. “I would also like to play for an Italian club that fights for big objectives, like winning the league.”

For Fernandes, Italy holds a special place beyond football. His affection for the country is rooted in personal history as much as professional ambition.

Strong Emotional Ties to Italian Football

The Manchester United captain’s connection to Italy dates back to the early stages of his career. Fernandes previously represented Novara, Udinese, and Sampdoria before returning to Portugal to join Sporting CP in 2017.

“I have a strong bond with Italy,” he explained. “My daughter was born there, and she often tells me she wants to learn Italian.”

That emotional attachment continues to shape his thinking. Fernandes admitted that the idea of combining family happiness with elite football competition in Italy is particularly appealing.

“If I can give her that and still play for a club that has big ambitions and competes for titles, that’s something I really like,” he added.

Open to a Return to Portugal—With Conditions

In addition to Spain and Italy, Fernandes acknowledged that a return to Portugal remains a possibility. The midfielder left Sporting CP for Manchester United in January 2020 in a deal worth £68 million, a move that transformed both his career and United’s attacking identity.

“I’ve thought about returning to Portugal,” he said. “Going back to a place where you were happy can sometimes damage the image you left behind.”

Out of respect and affection, Fernandes made it clear that Sporting would be his only realistic option in Portugal. However, he also expressed caution, stressing that sentiment alone would never dictate his decision.

“I wouldn’t want to go back just because of what I did in the past,” Fernandes explained. “I would want to return because I still feel I can give something.”

Family, Legacy, and Longevity

Beyond destinations and trophies, Fernandes’ comments reflected a broader perspective on career longevity. Unlike many players who set rigid timelines, the United captain is open to extending his playing days in unconventional ways.

“I want to prolong my career for as long as possible,” he said. “I don’t mind playing in a lower league if that’s what it takes. I just want to enjoy playing football.”

That mindset has helped Fernandes maintain consistency at the highest level, even as Manchester United navigate managerial changes and squad transitions. His leadership, durability, and professionalism continue to set standards within the dressing room.

What This Means for Manchester United

For now, Fernandes’ remarks should reassure United supporters rather than alarm them. There is no indication of an imminent departure, and the midfielder remains central to Ruben Amorim’s long-term plans.

However, his openness about future ambitions underlines a reality facing modern football clubs: elite players increasingly view their careers as global journeys rather than single-club stories.

As Manchester United rebuild around a core of experienced leaders and emerging talents, keeping Fernandes motivated and valued will remain a priority. His influence extends far beyond goals and assists, shaping mentality, tempo, and belief across the squad.

A Future Chapter Yet to Be Written

Bruno Fernandes’ future may one day take him to Spain, Italy, or even back to Portugal. For now, though, his focus remains on leading Manchester United through the challenges of the Premier League and beyond.

When that chapter eventually closes, Fernandes hopes it will be on his own terms—driven by ambition, honesty, and a continued love for the game.
