Mikel Arteta Reveals the £27 Million Signing That Elevated Arsenal to a New Level

Arsenal may have spent close to £1 billion on new players since the arrival of Mikel Arteta, but the Spanish manager believes that one of the club’s most modest signings, valued at £27 million, is the one that truly helped lift Arsenal into a different competitive tier.

During the latest summer transfer window, Arsenal’s total spending under Arteta surpassed the £900 million mark. In the Premier League, only Chelsea, Manchester United, and Manchester City have invested more in squad building since the 2020/21 season.

Yet, amidst all the big-name arrivals and high-profile investments, Arteta says it was the acquisition of David Raya—initially signed on loan—who made the most transformative impact.

David Raya: From Loan Signing to Arsenal’s Game-Changer

The decision to bring in Raya raised eyebrows at the time. Arsenal already had England international Aaron Ramsdale, who had been outstanding the previous season. Many questioned why Arsenal would recruit another first-choice goalkeeper.

But Raya silenced all doubts almost immediately.

He quickly secured the No. 1 spot and ended his debut campaign by winning the Premier League Golden Glove, showcasing remarkable consistency and composure. His standout performances throughout the 2023/24 season convinced Arsenal to make the move permanent for £27 million.

Since then, Raya’s form has only improved. The Spanish goalkeeper has conceded just eight goals in 20 matches this season—one of the strongest defensive records in Europe. His shot-stopping, aerial presence, and exceptional distribution have become vital components of Arsenal’s playing identity.

Raya will look to extend his impressive streak when Arsenal face his former club, Brentford, in their midweek Premier League fixture.

Arteta Praises Raya’s Journey and Impact

Ahead of the Brentford match, Arteta openly praised Raya’s evolution and influence.

“He is an extraordinary goalkeeper,” Arteta said.
“His story is incredible, especially the journey behind his transfer.”

Arteta also revealed that Raya had been on Arsenal’s radar long before his arrival.

“We actually tried to bring David in when I first joined the club,” Arteta explained.
“But he had to wait two more years. Everything he has gone through, and everything we’ve gone through together, has been phenomenal. I’m extremely happy to have him.”

When asked whether Raya ranks among the best signings of his tenure, Arteta admitted:

“It’s a very difficult question. But he is certainly one of the players who has taken us to a different level. He brings something unique to the way we want to play.”

Another Arrival from Brentford: Christian Nørgaard

Raya is not the only player Arsenal have recruited from Brentford. Danish midfielder Christian Nørgaard also joined Arsenal in the summer transfer window.

Although he has made just two Premier League appearances so far, Arteta insists the midfielder’s influence goes far beyond minutes on the pitch.

“From what I’ve seen on the field and from everything I’ve heard about him as a leader, he offers something valuable,” Arteta stated.
“When I called him, he was genuinely excited to join. He brings qualities we didn’t previously have in the squad, and I’m very happy he’s here.”

Brentford’s Strong Form a Warning for Arsenal

Arsenal will need to remain cautious heading into the clash with Brentford. The Bees are currently in excellent form, having won six of their last nine matches, and now sit comfortably in mid-table—far away from relegation trouble.

Brentford also have a recent record of troubling Arsenal. In April last season, they managed to steal a point, with Yoane Wissa equalizing after Thomas Partey’s opener.

As Arsenal continue their pursuit of the Premier League title, Arteta knows that his side cannot afford to underestimate a resilient and well-organized Brentford side—especially one motivated to challenge their former stars.
