Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has finally addressed the swirling speculation linking him to Premier League giants Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.

The 43-year-old Spaniard, who took over as head coach at Vitality Stadium in June 2023 following Gary O’Neil’s departure, stressed that he remains happy at Bournemouth and has no immediate plans to leave the club.

Since his arrival, Iraola has quickly earned a reputation as one of the most promising and sought-after young coaches in English football.

Historic Success in His First Season

In his debut campaign, Iraola guided Bournemouth to a ninth-place finish in the Premier League, the highest in the club’s top-flight history. This achievement not only broke Bournemouth’s record points tally but also solidified Iraola’s credentials as a tactically astute and forward-thinking manager.

However, the current season has proven far more challenging. The club lost three key defenders—Illia Zabarnyi, Dean Huijsen, and Milos Kerkez—during the summer transfer window, which disrupted the team’s stability.

The situation worsened in January when Bournemouth’s star forward, Antoine Semenyo, completed a £62.5 million transfer to Manchester City. His departure has left a void in attack and contributed to Bournemouth struggling near the bottom of the Premier League table.

Committed to Bournemouth

Despite speculation linking him to clubs such as Manchester United and Tottenham, Iraola made it clear that he is committed to his project at Bournemouth.

“I am very happy at Bournemouth, and I’ve always said that,” Iraola told Spanish outlet Marca. “For a coach, contracts are not the most important thing. Trust must be renewed each year. If the club is satisfied with me and I am happy, why not continue for another season?”

He added, “I don’t want to stay somewhere just because a contract has been signed. Once our objectives are met, we will sit down and discuss the next season and whether to continue or not. That’s the mindset, but staying here is certainly a good option.”

Links to Athletic Bilbao

Beyond England, Iraola has also been mentioned as a potential long-term successor to Ernesto Valverde at Athletic Bilbao. As a former player, he holds a deep emotional connection to the Basque club, leaving as the sixth-most capped player in the team’s history.

When asked about a possible return to San Mamés as manager, Iraola reiterated his measured stance.

“That’s a question I’ve received many times from clubs I’ve been involved with, and my answer is always the same,” he said.

“At Athletic Bilbao, they may have one of the coaches I admire most, Ernesto Valverde. I hope he stays for many years. That is my feeling as a fan,” added the former right-back.

He also acknowledged the unpredictable nature of football management.

“On the other hand, everyone has to make decisions when opportunities arise. When I started my career in Cyprus, I never knew I would move to Miranda, then Vallecas, and eventually Bournemouth. The same applies now; I don’t know what the future holds,” he admitted.

One of the Few Basque Managers in England

Currently, Iraola is one of just three Basque coaches in the Premier League, alongside Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta and Aston Villa’s Unai Emery.

Asked about the success of Basque managers in England, Iraola credited their La Liga background and adaptability.

“Generally, the level of coaches in La Liga is very high. After that, it’s all about adapting to the Premier League, language, and environment,” he explained.

“We all come from different backgrounds. Arteta, for example, spent almost his entire career in England. The Premier League is a very global league, and the number of English managers is decreasing.”

Thriving Amid Premier League Competition

Iraola closed by highlighting the intense competitiveness of English football.

“The competition is brutal, but I always enjoy facing Mikel and the others I know,” he said.

Despite the challenges this season, Iraola’s focus remains firmly on consolidating Bournemouth’s Premier League status and continuing to build his coaching legacy. His measured approach, coupled with loyalty to his current project, suggests that any moves to clubs like Manchester United or Tottenham remain firmly off the table—for now.

Bournemouth supporters can take comfort in knowing that their promising Basque manager is fully invested in the long-term success of the club, even as rumors swirl around Europe’s top teams.
