Barcelona faced a crushing 0-4 defeat against Atletico Madrid in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semifinals, putting the Catalan side in a challenging position ahead of the second leg. The loss became even more bitter after Eric Garcia received a red card in the closing stages, completing a night to forget for the Blaugrana.

Amidst mounting pressure from results and team performance, Garcia spoke out about several referee decisions and shared his perspective on Barcelona’s hopes for the return leg at Camp Nou.

Red Card Controversy and Referee Decisions

Eric Garcia was sent off in the 85th minute following a hard tackle, a decision that capped a difficult evening for Barcelona. The defender, however, questioned several other refereeing calls that he felt were inconsistent.

Garcia highlighted an early foul by Giuliano Simeone on Alejandro Balde, which initially went unpunished. Simeone eventually received a yellow card in the second half, but Garcia believed the situation warranted earlier intervention.

Speaking to the media after the match, Garcia expressed his frustration: “Did you see Giuliano’s tackle? And you think this is a red card? These decisions lately have really gone against us.”

He added context to his own dismissal: “I was just unlucky, I slipped and made contact. We knew it would be difficult, and they weren’t going to make it easy for us. Playing at home with our fans, we still have a chance to win.”

Assessing Barcelona’s Performance and Leg Two Hopes

While Garcia criticized referee decisions, he also admitted that Barcelona’s performance was below expectations. The first half, in particular, proved challenging, especially after conceding the opening goal, which he described as extraordinary misfortune.

“The first half was very tough for us. The first goal was incredibly unlucky. After that, Atletico were more focused and played with greater intensity… against a team like this, it’s difficult when you’re already behind,” Garcia explained.

Despite the large aggregate deficit, Garcia insisted that Barcelona remains determined. He emphasized that the second leg at Camp Nou offers an opportunity for a comeback.

“There’s still one game at home, with our supporters and players returning. If we focus from the start, we can turn this around,” Garcia said confidently.

Atletico Madrid Proves a Formidable Opponent

Even as he protested referee decisions, Garcia acknowledged that Atletico Madrid are no easy opponents. He also noted the spaces and vulnerabilities his team tried to address throughout the match.

“I won’t lie to you. They were very effective in exploiting gaps in our defense. There were plenty of spaces. In the second half, we made adjustments and changed certain things,” Garcia admitted.

He also referenced a goal that briefly appeared to have been scored but was ruled out, leaving some questions unanswered.

“We did have a goal… and we all have questions about it. I saw a replay, but I haven’t fully confirmed the moment. Still, we won’t use it as an excuse. At halftime, Flick reminded us that it’s a new game, and we have to try to win the second half,” Garcia stated.

Preparing for the Second Leg at Camp Nou

Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are set to meet again at Camp Nou in March for the second leg of the Copa del Rey semifinals. The task ahead remains daunting, but the home side is determined to fight back.

Eric Garcia’s statements highlight both his frustration with controversial refereeing and his belief in Barcelona’s ability to respond. While Atletico holds a strong advantage, Garcia and his teammates are focusing on preparation, strategy, and support from the Camp Nou crowd to mount a comeback.

“The first leg was harsh, but we’re ready for the challenge. Every player knows what’s at stake, and with our fans behind us, anything is possible. We need to stay focused and fight,” Garcia concluded.
