Luciano Spalletti emphasized that Juventus must learn to thrive under pressure and embrace challenges when facing difficult situations. His remarks came after the Bianconeri rallied from a two-goal deficit to secure a dramatic 2-2 draw against Lazio on Monday, February 9, 2026.
Juventus Bounce Back From Heavy Coppa Italia Defeat
Juventus entered the Lazio clash burdened by a heavy midweek defeat in the Coppa Italia quarterfinals, losing 0-3 to Atalanta. Ironically, despite the scoreline, Juventus had dominated possession and created more chances than their opponents—a pattern that recurred when they fell behind 0-2 against Lazio. Pedro and Gustav Isaksen had given the visitors a commanding lead, exploiting defensive lapses despite Juventus controlling much of the play.
However, Juventus’ response was markedly different this time. A powerful header from Weston McKennie rekindled hope, followed by Pierre Kalulu’s late close-range strike that secured a dramatic 2-2 draw in the dying moments of the game.
From a statistical standpoint, Juventus registered 33 shots compared to just eight for Lazio. Yet, the match highlighted a concerning trend: Juventus remain the Serie A team most prone to errors leading to goals this season.
Spalletti Defends Juventus Players
Addressing criticism over the defensive mistakes, Spalletti stood firmly behind his squad.
“These may be mistakes caused by the demands I place on my players,” Spalletti told DAZN Italy. “I ask them to play out every ball they win immediately rather than simply clearing it. We want to build from the back under pressure while simultaneously improving the quality of our play.”
He added that the numerous tactical instructions require players to read situations quickly and make split-second decisions.
“When you impose multiple demands, you must anticipate danger while evaluating both the positive and negative potential of each scenario simultaneously,” he explained.
Spalletti also addressed individual errors, including those involving key midfielder Manuel Locatelli.
“Mistakes happen. Locatelli has been one of our best performers this season, so losing the ball once doesn’t ruin everything. Even afterward, we have defensive structures, ways to close shooting lanes, and sometimes misfortune with deflections. That’s football,” he said.
Increasing Tempo Without Chaos
For Spalletti, the most important takeaway from the Lazio match was the team’s overall reaction.
“Our foundation must be the team’s collective response and overall performance. When the tempo rises and we are trying to recover from a two-goal deficit, we cannot simply increase intensity to the point of chaos,” he noted.
“We need to play faster, but not in a disorderly manner. Today, in some moments, we were still rushing when the game could have been developed more efficiently. Increasing tempo should never mean succumbing to confusion,” added the former Napoli and Italy national team manager.
Enjoying the Test at the Highest Level
Spalletti further elaborated on his football philosophy, stressing that Juventus must learn to enjoy the pressure, especially when initial plans go awry.
“We must live within pressure. That’s the joy of football—when you have to overturn a 0-2 deficit in the second half, something we had not planned at all,” he said.
“In these moments, you test yourself, seeing if you can handle tension at the highest level. That’s what we must embrace to know whether we deserve to compete at this level,” he added.
According to Spalletti, a team’s true character is revealed when things go wrong.
“Character means thinking clearly when everything is going badly and you must make decisions. That’s what makes the difference. This team managed to turn a very difficult situation around and showed outstanding performance, allowing us to move forward with a calmer mindset,” concluded the 66-year-old coach.
