Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has finally spoken out regarding the high-profile transfer saga involving striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and AC Milan during the recent winter transfer window. Contrary to widespread rumors, Glasner confirmed that the deal fell through not because Palace blocked the move, but due to a knee injury sustained by the French forward.
Mateta’s Desire to Leave
Earlier this winter, Mateta reportedly expressed his wish to leave Crystal Palace. The striker, who had been facing an unsettled environment within the squad, appeared eager to join a bigger club and take the next step in his career.
As the winter window approached its deadline, reports emerged that Mateta was set to move to AC Milan, with claims that he had even flown to Italy to finalize the transfer. Fans of the Rossoneri were excited about the potential signing, but in the end, the deal did not materialize, leaving both the player and supporters disappointed.
Speculation quickly arose that Palace had intentionally blocked the transfer, fueling social media debates and fan frustrations. However, Glasner has now clarified the truth behind the collapsed move.
Knee Injury Forced AC Milan to Pull Out
In a recent press conference, Glasner addressed the situation and denied any notion that Crystal Palace sabotaged Mateta’s potential transfer. He revealed that the striker had been struggling with a knee injury, which ultimately prevented AC Milan from completing the deal.
“Mateta has been dealing with a knee problem since November,” Glasner explained. “Despite the issue, he wanted to keep playing, so we tried to find ways for him to remain active on the pitch under those conditions.”
When Mateta underwent his medical examination at AC Milan, the Italian club’s medical team reportedly identified the knee problem. Considering the risk involved in signing a player with an existing injury, they decided against moving forward with the transfer.
“Mateta told us he wanted to leave, and AC Milan checked his condition,” Glasner continued. “After assessing the situation, they chose not to proceed with the signing. We will continue to evaluate his condition and determine the best approach moving forward.”
Interest Remains for Summer
Although Mateta’s winter move fell through, his performances have not gone unnoticed. Several top clubs are reportedly keeping tabs on the French striker ahead of the upcoming summer transfer window.
Among the potential suitors are Juventus, AC Milan, and Manchester United, all reportedly considering moves to acquire the talented forward from Crystal Palace. With Mateta still relatively young and highly rated, his future remains an exciting talking point for fans and pundits alike.
