Dominik Szoboszlai has confirmed that his future at Liverpool is not entirely in his own hands, amid ongoing contract discussions with the Premier League champions.
The Hungarian international, who is under contract until the summer of 2028, has become an increasingly vital figure in Liverpool’s squad. Reports suggest the club is looking to reward his rapid development with a contract upgrade reflecting his pivotal role under manager Arne Slot.
Contract Talks Remain Uncertain
When asked about the progress of negotiations between his representatives and Liverpool’s sporting director, Richard Hughes, Szoboszlai was candid.
“Honestly, there’s nothing yet. Nothing at all. From now on, it’s not in my hands,” he admitted.
He added that such situations are common in professional football.
“In football, wanting to stay doesn’t always mean things will move forward immediately. But if the right offer comes, we’ll see,” Szoboszlai explained.
Focused on Performance
For the moment, Szoboszlai is prioritizing his performance on the pitch over contract speculation.
“My main focus is my work on the field. The future will take care of itself,” he said.
He also expressed his comfort and happiness at Liverpool.
“I love this city, I love this club, and I enjoy playing alongside my teammates. I love Anfield, I love the fans. We’ll see what happens. It’s not my decision, but I want to stay,” he emphasized.
This season, Szoboszlai has been one of Liverpool’s standout performers, even stepping into an emergency right-back role when Joe Gomez, Jeremie Frimpong, and Conor Bradley were sidelined with injuries.
He notably played this role during Liverpool’s 4-1 demolition of Newcastle United last weekend.
Returning to Natural Position
Despite his versatility, Szoboszlai stressed that playing at right-back is not a long-term plan.
“Not long-term, not even medium-term,” he said. “I am a midfielder, and I hope to return to my natural position once our right-back is back.”
He emphasized his willingness to support the team whenever needed.
“If the coach or team needs me there, I will play and give my best,” he stated.
With the return of several squad members, Liverpool now have more options in midfield.
“Now Endo is ready to play, Curtis Jones is also fit, so we have plenty of options,” Szoboszlai noted.
More Dangerous in Midfield
Szoboszlai acknowledged that playing in his preferred central role makes him more threatening offensively.
“Being in midfield suits me better. I am closer to goal and can be more dangerous,” he said.
Conversely, playing as right-back keeps him far from attacking opportunities.
“At right-back, I feel far from the goal. But I do everything for the team to make sure we don’t concede,” he explained.
He emphasized the balance between defensive duties and attacking support.
“The most important thing when playing in defense is not to concede. After that, you help the attack with crosses, long balls, or whatever the team needs,” the 25-year-old midfielder added.
Szoboszlai’s Growing Role at Liverpool
Szoboszlai’s adaptability highlights his value to Liverpool, showcasing his willingness to step out of position for the good of the team. His contributions both defensively and offensively underline why he has become an integral part of Slot’s squad this season.
With contract talks ongoing and his natural midfield role restored as key players return from injury, Liverpool fans can expect Szoboszlai to continue influencing games at the heart of the team, while remaining patient regarding his long-term future.
