AC Milan manager Massimiliano Allegri has urged his team to stay grounded after their disappointing defeat to Lazio, admitting that the dream of winning the Serie A title (Scudetto) this season is no longer a realistic objective for the Rossoneri.

The loss at the Stadio Olimpico dealt a significant blow to Milan’s title aspirations, especially at a moment when they had a chance to close the gap on league leaders Inter Milan.

Lazio Defeat Hurts Milan’s Title Momentum

Heading into the matchday, AC Milan were sitting in second place in the Serie A standings, trailing city rivals Inter Milan by seven points. However, an opportunity opened up when Inter were held to a 1-1 draw by Atalanta, giving Milan the chance to reduce the gap to just five points.

Unfortunately for the Rossoneri, things did not go according to plan in Rome.

A decisive goal from Gustav Isaksen secured a crucial victory for Lazio, leaving AC Milan empty-handed and unable to capitalize on Inter’s slip-up. The result means Milan remain significantly behind in the title race, making their Scudetto ambitions far more difficult to achieve.

Following the match, Allegri admitted that the defeat forced his team to confront reality regarding their chances of lifting the Serie A trophy this season.

Allegri: Scudetto Was Never the Main Target

Speaking to DAZN after the game, Allegri acknowledged that expectations surrounding Milan had increased after Inter dropped points earlier in the day.

However, the experienced Italian coach insisted that the Scudetto was never the primary target set by the club at the beginning of the season.

“Recently everyone has been talking about the Scudetto,” Allegri said. “Yes, after Inter drew their match, suddenly the conversation turned toward Milan and the title race. But we have to be realistic about our situation.”

The Milan boss emphasized that while the team has performed well in many moments this season, competing for the championship was always going to be extremely challenging.

Focus Now Shifts to Champions League Qualification

Instead of chasing an increasingly unlikely title dream, Allegri believes AC Milan should concentrate on securing a top-four finish, which would guarantee qualification for the UEFA Champions League next season.

According to the manager, returning to Europe’s top club competition has been the club’s main objective from the very start of the campaign.

With nine matches remaining in the Serie A season, Milan are still in a strong position to achieve that goal. Allegri warned that losing focus now could undo the progress the team has made in recent months.

“I believe Milan have had a good season so far,” Allegri explained. “Our priority must be qualifying for the Champions League next year. If we lose focus now, we risk destroying the work we’ve built over the past six months.”

His comments highlight the importance of maintaining consistency in the final stretch of the season as the battle for European places intensifies.

Important Fixture Against Torino Next

AC Milan will now have about a week to regroup and prepare for their next challenge in the 2025/2026 Serie A campaign.

The Rossoneri are scheduled to face Torino at San Siro on Sunday, March 22, 2026, in what could be another crucial match in their quest to secure a Champions League spot.

Torino, often considered one of Italy’s dangerous “dark horse” teams, are known for their disciplined style of play, meaning Allegri’s side will need to deliver a strong performance if they hope to return to winning ways.

As the season approaches its final stages, Milan’s focus is clear: secure a top-four finish and return to the Champions League, even if the dream of lifting the Scudetto must now be set aside.
