Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior has hailed striker Joao Pedro as reaching the level of elite forwards such as Erling Haaland, Harry Kane, and Kylian Mbappe. The praise comes after the 24-year-old Brazilian netted a hat-trick in Chelsea’s 4-1 victory over Aston Villa in the Premier League on Thursday early morning WIB.

Pedro’s three goals brought his tally to 17 across all competitions this season, highlighting a remarkable scoring form in his first full season with the Blues.

Stellar Performance Against Aston Villa

In the Premier League clash at Villa Park, Pedro demonstrated composure, precision, and clinical finishing. Out of his 14 league goals this season, none have come from the penalty spot. Only Haaland has a higher non-penalty tally in the Premier League with 19 goals.

In comparison across Europe’s top five leagues, Kane leads with 20 non-penalty goals for Bayern Munich, while Mbappe has 15 for Real Madrid. Rosenior was unequivocal when asked whether Pedro currently ranks at this elite level.

“Joao is now in that category. In the two months since I’ve been here, he’s consistently shown he is a world-class striker,” Rosenior stated.

Comparisons with Elite Strikers

While Rosenior praised Pedro, he cautioned against direct comparisons with Haaland.

“I am talking about my player; it would not be right to compare him directly with Erling. I don’t know him personally, but from what I see, he is an outstanding world-class striker,” he said.

Rosenior also emphasized that he would not trade Pedro for any other striker at this stage, noting the player’s age provides room for further development.

“The best thing about Joao is his age; he can still improve. I’ve seen areas where he can get better, but the level he is showing now is world-class, and it’s our job, the club’s job, and his job to maintain that standard,” Rosenior added.

Chelsea’s Hope for a 20-Goal Striker

Chelsea hopes Pedro can become the first pure striker in the club’s history to score 20 goals in a season since Diego Costa in 2016/2017. While Cole Palmer and Eden Hazard surpassed 20 goals in recent years, they did so from deeper or wider positions rather than as central forwards.

Chelsea will next face Wrexham in the fifth round of the FA Cup on Sunday (8/3/2026), offering Pedro an opportunity to extend his impressive run.

Statistical Context

Pedro’s contributions this season, when focusing solely on non-penalty goals, rival some of Europe’s best forwards. However, including penalties, he remains behind Haaland (22 league goals), Mbappe (23), and Kane (30).

Chelsea’s penalty duties are primarily handled by Palmer, who has converted 18 out of 19 attempts since his debut in September 2023, limiting Pedro’s chance to add to his tally from the spot.

Pedro has also registered five league assists, surpassing Mbappe and matching Kane, while Haaland leads with seven. Interestingly, Pedro has achieved this efficiency with only 57 shots, significantly fewer than Kane’s 96, highlighting a conversion rate of 24.6%—higher than Haaland (22.5%) and Mbappe (20.7%) but slightly below Kane (31.3%).

Room for Growth

Pedro’s first season with Chelsea represents the most prolific period in his career to date. Since his move from Watford to Brighton in 2023/2024, he has accumulated 33 league goals, including 24 non-penalty goals, along with 14 assists.

Despite these impressive numbers, Haaland, Kane, and Mbappe have maintained extraordinary productivity over multiple seasons. Kane, for example, boasts 92 league goals, 68 non-penalty goals, and 21 assists since 2023/2024—figures surpassing Pedro’s totals.

These statistics underline that while Pedro has made a significant leap in his development, sustaining this level across several seasons will be crucial for him to truly join the ranks of Europe’s elite forwards.

Conclusion

Joao Pedro’s meteoric rise at Chelsea has earned him high praise from his manager and comparisons to some of the world’s top strikers. While his numbers are impressive, consistency over multiple seasons remains the ultimate test. With his age, talent, and current form, the Brazilian forward has the potential to cement himself as one of the Premier League’s and Europe’s most feared attackers in the coming years.
