Jurgen Klopp has affirmed that Mohamed Salah is an irreplaceable figure at Liverpool. The legendary manager even described Salah’s career at Anfield as “a beautiful film with a happy ending.” Salah’s journey, marked by incredible goals and records, has left a permanent mark on the club and its fans.
From Roma to Liverpool
Klopp brought Salah to Liverpool from AS Roma in June 2017 for an initial fee of £34 million. Despite occasional disagreements early on, their relationship has remained strong over the years.
The two exchanged messages recently, after Salah announced he would leave Liverpool at the end of this season, a year before his contract expires. The Egyptian forward now ranks third on Liverpool’s all-time top scorers list with 255 goals, underlining his immense impact at the club.
An Irreplaceable Talent
According to Klopp, Salah’s extraordinary contributions make it impossible to find a like-for-like replacement.
“Players with a character like his are irreplaceable,” Klopp said. “I am not sure there is another player like him out there. Yes, there are other wingers with different strengths, but Salah’s numbers are unmatched. The stats for a winger are incredible. Even for a striker, it would be hard to match. So, if it’s impossible, why try?”
Klopp emphasizes that Liverpool should focus on a new approach rather than searching for an identical player. “I’m not in a position to advise, but just bring in new players and play football that can bring success,” he added.
Learning from Past Departures
Klopp also reflected on previous key departures from Liverpool, including Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, Georginio Wijnaldum, Jordan Henderson, and James Milner.
“We lost Mane, an outstanding player. Firmino, incredible. When Wijnaldum left, maybe not everyone felt the gap immediately, but soon realized his importance,” Klopp said. “Then Henderson left, Milner too. But new players came. That’s football. Don’t chase shadows of the past. Find a new way and play.”
Not Always Easy to Handle
While praising Salah, Klopp admitted that the forward has not always been easy to manage. Now a global football ambassador for Red Bull, Klopp remains connected to the player and the club.
“I can sum it up: I am very happy and proud to have been part of this journey,” he said. “He’s a great teammate, an incredible person, though not always pleasant when he doesn’t score. We criticized him for being selfish, but then celebrated after he dribbled past five players and scored. We knew we argued, but it was never serious.”
Respect and Professionalism
Klopp also recalled minor disagreements in public, such as during a match against West Ham. “We would think five seconds later, ‘Don’t do this in public, try again tomorrow.’ The next day it was fine. It happened in front of fans, but respect between us never faded,” he explained.
Salah’s partnership with Mane also presented unique challenges. “When he played alongside Mane, it was a challenge. Special players are always a challenge. Name one who isn’t?” Klopp added.
A Career Like a Beautiful Film
Now, Klopp views Salah’s Liverpool journey from a broader perspective. “It’s time to look back, not for the fans—there’s still much to fight for—but for me, it’s different. I can see it all clearly now,” he said.
“It’s been an incredible time with an incredible player. We often take it for granted, but this team is extraordinary,” Klopp continued. “In moments like this, time seems to pause. You watch it like a film. My goal was always that, when I am old, I can look back and smile. And it will happen.”
He concluded, “Mo’s journey is a beautiful film. To make it interesting, of course, there were conflicts. But it’s still a beautiful film with a happy ending.”
Looking Ahead
As Liverpool prepares for the remainder of the season, Salah’s influence on and off the pitch remains evident. His legacy as one of the club’s greatest players is secure. While replacements will come, Klopp’s perspective reinforces that no player can truly replicate Salah’s unique impact.
Fans will continue to cherish his goals, leadership, and unforgettable moments at Anfield. Salah’s story, as Klopp notes, is more than statistics—it’s a narrative of brilliance, passion, and joy that has inspired Liverpool supporters worldwide.
Liverpool now faces the challenge of building a new team dynamic, drawing lessons from the past while honoring Salah’s unparalleled contributions. For Klopp, and for fans around the world, Salah’s journey remains a cinematic experience: thrilling, emotional, and unforgettable.
