Real Madrid have officially taken legal steps to challenge Federico Valverde’s red card following their thrilling 3-2 victory over Atletico Madrid in La Liga. Despite the controversial decision, Los Blancos managed to secure all three points in a high-intensity Madrid derby.
The incident forced Carlo Ancelotti’s side to play the final 13 minutes with just ten men. Valverde was sent off in the 77th minute after a strong challenge on Alex Baena—an action the referee deemed serious enough for a straight red card.
The decision immediately sparked outrage within the Real Madrid camp, with players and coaching staff arguing that the foul did not warrant such a harsh punishment.
Real Madrid Question Referee’s Judgment
The club is now preparing a formal appeal, insisting that the red card was excessive and not proportionate to the nature of the tackle. Real Madrid believe the decision lacked consistency and fairness compared to similar incidents.
According to reports from Spanish outlet MARCA, the club suspects that external factors may have influenced the referee’s call. In particular, there is speculation that the history between Valverde and Baena played a role in how the incident was judged.
The two players were previously involved in a heated altercation back in 2023, when Baena was still playing for Villarreal. That situation escalated off the pitch and even reached legal proceedings before eventually being resolved.
Although that chapter was closed, Real Madrid feel that lingering perceptions from that conflict may have unfairly impacted the referee’s interpretation of the recent challenge.
Internally, there is a strong belief within the club that the same tackle involving a different player might not have resulted in a red card. One sentiment reportedly circulating inside the dressing room highlights this frustration: “If that challenge was on Koke, it would have only been a yellow.”
This reflects the club’s growing concern over what they see as inconsistency in officiating decisions.
Suspension Risk Still Looms
As it stands, Valverde is facing a potential two-match suspension. Real Madrid are hoping their appeal will either overturn the red card entirely or at least reduce the length of the ban.
However, overturning such decisions in Spanish football is notoriously difficult. The disciplinary system rarely reverses on-field calls unless there is clear evidence of a major error.
With that in mind, the club is also preparing for the possibility of being without one of their key midfielders in upcoming fixtures. Valverde’s absence could significantly affect the team’s balance, given his importance in both defensive coverage and attacking transitions.
