Former Chelsea star Joe Cole has voiced serious concerns about the future of rising talent Cole Palmer, especially amid growing interest from Manchester United. According to Cole, the club’s unstable internal situation and unclear long-term vision could push key players to consider leaving as early as this summer.
Chelsea’s Decline Sparks Worry

Since taking over from Roman Abramovich in 2022, the club has spent over £1 billion on transfers. Yet, instead of assembling a proven, title-challenging squad, much of that investment has gone into signing young prospects with long-term potential.
This approach, according to Cole, has left Chelsea trailing behind rivals like Manchester City and Arsenal—clubs with clearer footballing identities and immediate competitive goals.
“You’re not buying players to win football matches—you’re buying assets. And I don’t think that approach will ever work,” Cole said on The Dressing Room podcast.
Comparing Two Eras: Abramovich vs Now
Cole drew a sharp contrast between Chelsea’s current ownership and the Roman Abramovich era. Under Abramovich, every decision revolved around winning trophies and achieving success on the pitch.
Back then, Chelsea consistently targeted the best managers and elite players, with a clear objective: compete for and win every competition possible.
“You can say what you want about the Abramovich era, but everything was built around winning trophies. It started from the pitch outward,” Cole explained.
“Now, the new ownership came in, spent heavily, but didn’t always bring in the right players. Over £1 billion has been invested based on the idea that young players will develop. But fans are frustrated because they don’t feel the club is truly competing—and they’re right.”
Dressing Room Frustration and Exit Threats
The consequences of this strategy are beginning to show inside the dressing room. Reports suggest that Enzo Fernandez is open to leaving, while Palmer himself is starting to question his long-term future at Stamford Bridge.
Interest from Manchester United adds another layer of pressure. With his talent and consistency, Palmer would have no shortage of suitors if he decides to move on.
“Players are getting frustrated. And now you’re entering a phase where your best players could start leaving,” Cole warned.
“If you’re Cole Palmer, you’re probably thinking: ‘I can play anywhere in the world—what’s actually happening here?’”
Cole also criticized the club’s overall direction, suggesting that fans are increasingly aware of the disconnect between spending and results.
“You can’t run a football club purely like a business. Fans can see through it. Chelsea aren’t really competing with Manchester City or Arsenal right now—and with this kind of recruitment, how can they?”
