Liverpool coach Arne Slot has finally commented on Mohamed Salah’s decision to leave the club, emphasizing that the news came as no surprise to him. Slot also praised Salah’s legacy, acknowledging his contributions over nine remarkable years at Anfield. The Egyptian forward announced via social media that this season would be his last with the Reds, leaving fans and football enthusiasts worldwide reflecting on his impact.

Salah is set to depart on a free transfer a year before his contract expires, despite being the club’s third-highest all-time goalscorer. Over nearly a decade at Liverpool, he has won numerous titles, including two Premier League trophies, the 2019 UEFA Champions League, and the FIFA Club World Cup.

Slot Already Knew the News

During an interview at Liverpool’s AXA Training Centre, Slot revealed that he had been aware of Salah’s decision from the start.

“I already knew, so it wasn’t breaking news for me. But it’s incredible to see and hear the reactions from his teammates and fans worldwide, reflecting on what he’s achieved for this club and football in general,” Slot said.

Admiration Before Working Together

Slot admitted that his admiration for Salah began as a fan, watching the forward perform incredible feats on the pitch.

“I mostly observed him as a supporter, watching him excel in Liverpool colors and break record after record. Of course, his performances against Manchester City stood out, but he impressed consistently in other matches as well,” Slot recalled.

This admiration only deepened once Slot began working directly with Salah.

“From the very first day I worked with him, I was impressed by his professionalism. At the start of the season, we test players’ fitness after the break, and he outperformed everyone. He was the fittest player returning, which is an ideal scenario for a coach. Having your star player in peak condition is invaluable,” said the 47-year-old manager.

A Relentless Drive to Excel

Slot highlighted Salah’s unwavering drive to prove himself, even when he has nothing left to prove.

“He has nothing to prove to anyone, yet he feels the need to demonstrate something every three days. That hunger never stops, and it’s what makes him truly special,” Slot remarked.

According to Slot, Salah ranks among the best players globally over the last decade.

“Many great players exist, but he is undoubtedly one of the finest in the past ten years. Everyone recognizes him as one of the best,” Slot noted.

Mentality and Consistency

Slot praised Salah’s consistency and mental fortitude, which shine in every match.

“His hunger every three days, professionalism, commitment to the team, desire to score, and eagerness to play—even if subbed off with three minutes remaining—these qualities are remarkable. From day one, I knew his influence over the last ten years in football wasn’t by chance,” Slot said.

Adding to His Legacy

Last season, Salah played a pivotal role, scoring 29 goals and providing 18 assists, helping Liverpool secure their 20th league title during Slot’s first season in charge.

Slot hopes Salah can continue to enhance his legacy before leaving.

“I hope he can make his departure even more special in the coming weeks and months. We’re still fighting for something extraordinary, but he will always leave this club as a legend. Much of our recent success is thanks to his contributions,” he added.

Remembering a Formidable Front Line

Slot also reminisced about Liverpool’s feared attacking trio during Salah’s era, alongside Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.

“I watched them as a fan, and they were formidable. People still talk about them, and rightly so,” Slot said.

Even in his final season, Salah remains exceptional statistically.

“I don’t know if this is his best season numerically, but it’s impressive. He’s scored and assisted more than ever. This kind of consistency doesn’t happen often in the Premier League. He will leave as a true legend,” Slot affirmed.

Looking Ahead

Although Liverpool’s chances of retaining the Premier League title are slim, the team still has opportunities for silverware. The Reds have advanced to the quarter-finals in both the FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League, giving Salah a chance to end his Liverpool career on a high note.

Arne Slot’s reflections underline the respect and admiration Mohamed Salah has earned throughout his career. His professionalism, relentless drive, and historic achievements ensure that, even as he departs, his influence at Liverpool will be remembered for years to come.
