Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has called on his former club to be smart and proactive in the upcoming summer transfer window, urging them to sign four key players to maintain their upward trajectory under Michael Carrick.
With United currently sitting inside the Premier League’s top four, Ferdinand believes the foundations of a competitive squad are already in place. Rather than a complete overhaul, he insists that targeted reinforcements in specific areas will be enough to keep pace with rivals like Manchester City.
Midfield Overhaul Becomes Top Priority
One of the main concerns highlighted by Ferdinand is the midfield, especially with major changes expected. Casemiro is set to leave the club, while Manuel Ugarte could also depart, leaving a significant gap in the center of the pitch.
Ferdinand stressed that strengthening this area should be the club’s primary focus. However, he cautioned against spending excessively on big-name stars, emphasizing that balance and chemistry within the squad are more important.
Maintaining the effectiveness of key players like Bruno Fernandes and rising star Kobbie Mainoo is crucial, and any new additions must complement their roles rather than disrupt the team’s rhythm.
Ferdinand’s Four-Man Transfer Blueprint
Speaking on his podcast, Ferdinand outlined a clear and realistic transfer strategy. He identified three key positions that need reinforcement: midfield, attack, and full-back.
His plan includes signing:
- Two central midfielders (one immediate starter, one young rotational option)
- One young striker to provide depth
- One full-back to increase tactical flexibility
“If United bring in four players this summer and two of them are starters, I think that’s a very solid and realistic window,” Ferdinand explained.
“My priority would be two central midfielders—one ready to start and another younger option who can rotate alongside Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo, and the new signing. I’d also look for a young striker as backup, and a full-back to complete the squad,” he added.
Elliot Anderson Emerges as a Key Target
While high-profile names like Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimarães have been linked with United, Ferdinand surprisingly backed Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson as the ideal midfield addition.
He praised Anderson’s energy, versatility, and ability to operate as a true box-to-box midfielder—qualities he believes United currently lack.
“Elliot Anderson has really moved to the top of the list for me. I think he’s an outstanding player—not just the right profile, but also the right character. He would be a fantastic addition to this squad,” Ferdinand said.
“Tonali is a top talent, and Guimarães as well. But United need a midfielder who is all-action—someone who can cover ground, bring energy, strength, and drive the team forward. Right now, Anderson ticks all those boxes.”
Smart Additions Over Big Spending
Ferdinand also emphasized that United should avoid chasing marquee signings in attack. Instead, he recommended bringing in a young striker who can develop gradually while providing depth to the current forward line.
Similarly, adding a full-back would improve squad depth and give Carrick more tactical options, especially in high-intensity matches.
“I’d go for a younger striker to support what we already have, and a full-back. That’s it. People might say you need ten new players, but I don’t think a massive rebuild is necessary,” he explained.

Following the international break, Manchester United will return to Premier League action with a crucial home fixture against Leeds United on April 13. A win would further solidify their position in the Champions League spots and extend their impressive run of form.
Regardless of who takes over permanently from Ruben Amorim next season, Ferdinand’s insights offer a clear blueprint: efficiency over excess.

Ferdinand concluded by reiterating that while improvements are needed, stability must remain the priority. United are finally building momentum again, and disrupting that progress with unnecessary changes could prove costly.
