Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has doubled down on his criticism of Blues striker Nicolas Jackson, following a heated exchange between the two after Chelsea’s recent matches. Mikel, who enjoyed a long and successful career at Stamford Bridge, had voiced his concerns about the lack of a clinical striker in the current Chelsea squad, specifically calling out Jackson after a lackluster performance against Manchester City. In response, Jackson, who plays for the Senegal national team, hit back at the former player after his standout performance against Wolverhampton Wanderers, where he scored and assisted in Chelsea’s 6-2 victory.

Mikel’s Initial Criticism

The controversy began after Chelsea’s 2-0 defeat to Manchester City, a game in which the Blues struggled to find the back of the net despite creating several opportunities. In his post-match analysis, John Obi Mikel did not mince words when discussing the team’s attacking woes, singling out Nicolas Jackson as a focal point of his critique. Mikel emphasized the importance of having a reliable striker who can consistently score goals, something he believes Chelsea currently lacks.

“You need a striker who knows how to kick a ball back in the back of the net, and that’s what we don’t have,” Mikel said. “I know I talk so much about him [Jackson], and sometimes I sound like I disrespect him. I don’t disrespect him. I think at Chelsea, we need a best striker who can get us a goal.”

Mikel’s comments reflected the frustration of many Chelsea supporters who have been yearning for a prolific goalscorer to lead the line, especially in high-stakes matches.

Jackson’s Fiery Response

Just days after Mikel’s comments, Nicolas Jackson delivered a strong response on the pitch. The Senegalese striker played a key role in Chelsea’s 6-2 demolition of Wolverhampton Wanderers, scoring one goal and providing an assist in a much-needed victory for the Blues. However, it was Jackson’s post-match comments that grabbed headlines.

After the game, Jackson did not shy away from addressing Mikel’s criticism, telling the former Chelsea midfielder, “Shut your mouth,” in a blunt and emotionally charged rebuttal.

Mikel Stands His Ground

Despite Jackson’s fiery response, John Obi Mikel has refused to back down from his initial assessment. In a follow-up statement, Mikel reiterated his belief that Chelsea requires a more consistent and clinical striker if they are to compete at the highest level.

“I stand by what I said,” Mikel stated. “As an ex-player and someone who understands the pressures of playing at a club like Chelsea, I know what it takes to succeed there. My comments were never about disrespecting Nicolas Jackson or his abilities. They were about highlighting a problem that needs to be addressed for the team to improve. Scoring one goal or having one good game doesn’t change that.”

Mikel also clarified that his critique was meant to be constructive, aimed at pushing Jackson and the team to reach their full potential. “Every player has room to grow, and I want Nicolas to succeed. But the reality is, at Chelsea, the standards are incredibly high, and every player must perform consistently,” Mikel added
