Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong could not hide his disappointment after his team was eliminated from the UEFA Champions League 2025/2026. The Blaugrana’s journey came to an end in the quarterfinals following a narrow aggregate defeat to Atletico Madrid.

Playing at the Metropolitano Stadium on Wednesday (April 15, 2026), Barcelona fell 1-2 in the second leg. Combined with their 0-2 loss in the first leg, the result saw Diego Simeone’s side advance with a 3-2 aggregate victory.

Despite the painful outcome, De Jong believes Barcelona delivered a strong overall performance and deserved more from the tie.

Strong Performance, Harsh Outcome for Barcelona

Barcelona started the match in promising fashion, showing urgency and attacking intent from the very first minutes. Their efforts paid off early when Lamine Yamal scored a quick opening goal, reigniting hopes of a dramatic comeback.

For a moment, it looked like Barcelona had seized control of the tie. However, Atletico Madrid responded through Ademola Lookman, whose crucial goal shifted the momentum and restored the home side’s aggregate advantage.

De Jong admitted that matches at the highest level, especially in the Champions League, are often decided by the smallest margins. According to him, those fine details ultimately worked against Barcelona on the night.

“We played a really good game and gave everything on the pitch. I feel like luck just wasn’t on our side tonight,” De Jong told Movistar+.

The Dutch midfielder emphasized that Barcelona, a squad filled with young talent, had fought tirelessly but were undone by moments beyond their control.

Red Card and Key Moments Change the Game

Barcelona’s task became even more difficult in the second half when Eric Garcia received a red card, forcing the team to play with ten men during a crucial period of the match.

The sending-off proved to be a turning point, disrupting Barcelona’s rhythm and limiting their ability to maintain pressure. Even so, the team continued to push forward in search of the goals needed to turn the tie around.

De Jong chose not to dwell on setbacks, instead highlighting the team’s resilience and determination despite adversity.

Optimism Remains for Barcelona’s Young Core

Although elimination from the Champions League is a major disappointment, De Jong remains optimistic about the future of the team. He believes Barcelona are on the right path, especially with a young squad that continues to grow and gain valuable experience.

The 21-shirt midfielder urged fans and teammates alike to stay patient and trust the process, insisting that success will come if the team maintains its current level of performance.

“Going out in the quarterfinals is never good because we wanted to win the competition. But that doesn’t mean we didn’t play well or that we’re not on the right track,” he added.

De Jong also stressed that setbacks like this are part of building a stronger, more mature team capable of competing at the highest level in the future.

Focus Shifts to La Liga Title Race

With their European campaign over, Barcelona will now turn their full attention to domestic competitions, particularly La Liga. They remain in a strong position at the top of the table, holding a comfortable lead in the title race.

De Jong called on his teammates to quickly recover mentally ahead of their next league fixture against Celta Vigo at Camp Nou—a match that could be crucial in maintaining their momentum.

He also described the Champions League exit as a valuable lesson for the squad, especially the younger players, as they continue their development.

“In the Champions League, everything is decided by small details, and sometimes you need a bit of luck. If we keep playing like this, that luck will come to us one day,” De Jon
