José Mourinho’s name has once again resurfaced in connection with a potential return to Real Madrid as the current season nears its conclusion. The experienced Portuguese manager is reportedly back on the radar of Los Blancos as the club evaluates candidates to lead a new era at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Real Madrid are believed to be exploring a managerial change after a season that has fallen short of expectations under Xabi Alonso and later Álvaro Arbeloa. In this context, Mourinho is seen internally as a proven winner who already understands the intense pressure and demands that come with managing one of the biggest clubs in world football.

Initial Contact Between Real Madrid and Mourinho Camp

According to reports from Spain, early communication has already taken place between Real Madrid officials and representatives of Mourinho. His agent, Jorge Mendes, is said to have opened preliminary discussions with the club hierarchy to explore the possibility of a reunion.

However, despite the growing speculation, any potential comeback is far from straightforward. Spanish outlet AS reports that Mourinho has set out two key conditions that must be satisfied before he would agree to leave Benfica and return to the Spanish capital.

Mourinho Demands Greater Control in Transfer Policy

The first major condition relates to Real Madrid’s transfer strategy. Mourinho is reportedly insisting on having a stronger influence over player recruitment if he is to take charge of the squad.

Rather than simply advising on potential targets, the former Chelsea, Inter Milan, and Roma boss wants a direct role in shaping the club’s transfer direction. This includes identifying weak areas in the squad and determining which positions require reinforcement.

Mourinho reportedly believes that Real Madrid’s current squad still contains structural imbalances. As a result, he wants sufficient authority to ensure that future signings align with his tactical vision and long-term planning.

During his previous spell at the Bernabéu, Mourinho already had significant input in the transfer market, playing a key role in the arrivals of players such as Luka Modrić, Mesut Özil, and Sami Khedira, who became important figures in the team.

Full Autonomy Over the Dressing Room

The second condition set by Mourinho concerns complete control of the first-team environment. He is said to be demanding full autonomy over sporting decisions inside the dressing room, without excessive interference from other departments.

While Mourinho is not asking for a complete restructuring of Real Madrid’s sporting hierarchy, he is clear that all tactical and squad-related decisions must ultimately rest with the head coach.

This requirement reflects his desire to create a stable and disciplined working environment, where the coaching staff can operate without internal disruption throughout the season.

Sources suggest that Mourinho is particularly keen to avoid situations of internal tension similar to those seen in recent seasons, where disagreements between players and coaching staff have occasionally surfaced.

Benfica Contract Clause Could Open the Door

Despite Benfica’s efforts to retain him, including discussions over a potential contract extension, Mourinho’s future remains open. The Portuguese club are keen to continue their project with him, but Real Madrid’s interest could change the equation quickly.

Importantly, Mourinho’s current contract is believed to include a release clause that could facilitate a move. Reports indicate that he could leave Benfica for a fee of around €3 million.

However, there is a critical time restriction attached to this clause. Real Madrid would need to act quickly, as the release option is only valid within 10 days after Benfica’s final match of the season.

Decision Time for Real Madrid

With all conditions and timing factors in play, Real Madrid face a crucial decision. Mourinho’s return would mark one of the most high-profile managerial comebacks in the club’s modern history, but only if the Spanish giants are willing to meet his strict demands.

As the summer approaches, the next steps from both parties will determine whether José Mourinho once again walks through the doors of the Santiago Bernabéu as head coach of Los Blancos.
