Al Hilal have reportedly reached an agreement with West Ham United for the transfer of Crysencio Summerville, moving decisively to secure one of the most exciting Dutch attacking players of his generation.
The Saudi Arabian club appear to have overcome competition from several European sides by presenting West Ham with an offer significantly stronger than the proposals previously placed on the table. Reports have valued the agreement at around £60 million, although some accounts have suggested the complete package could rise towards £68 million. The transfer is expected to proceed once Summerville completes the necessary medical examination and the remaining contractual formalities.
For Al Hilal, the move represents another statement of ambition. The club are not merely adding an established name approaching the final stages of his career. They are pursuing a 24-year-old winger who should be entering his prime years and who has already demonstrated his ability in English football.
For West Ham, the agreement offers an opportunity to generate a substantial fee following a difficult campaign that ended in relegation from the Premier League. Summerville had attracted attention from clubs including Roma, Aston Villa, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, but Al Hilal’s proposal ultimately placed the Saudi side in the strongest negotiating position.

Al Hilal Win the Race for Summerville

Born in Rotterdam, he developed in Feyenoord’s youth system before gaining senior experience through loan spells with FC Dordrecht and ADO Den Haag. Those moves gave him regular football and allowed him to develop beyond academy competition.

The club are accustomed to challenging for trophies. New signings are judged not only on individual statistics but also on whether they help maintain Al Hilal’s position as one of the strongest teams in Asia.
Summerville will therefore need to adapt quickly.
He must learn the movement of his new teammates, understand the manager’s preferred attacking structure and develop chemistry with the players around him.
The Saudi league’s leading clubs now possess significant attacking talent, meaning defensive opponents often adopt compact and cautious strategies. Summerville may frequently receive possession against teams with several players behind the ball.

A move to Rome would have offered Summerville continued participation in European football and the opportunity to develop in Serie A.
Roma’s project may also have appealed from a tactical perspective. Italian football places a strong emphasis on positional detail, movement between the lines and exploiting specific defensive weaknesses.
Summerville’s ability to play on the wing or move centrally could have made him useful in several attacking structures.
However, transfer negotiations are shaped by more than tactical fit. West Ham wanted a higher fee, and Al Hilal were able to satisfy that demand while offering the player a considerably more valuable contract.
Roma’s experience highlights the difficulty European clubs increasingly face when competing with the wealthiest Saudi sides.
Even if the European destination offers Champions League football or a prestigious domestic competition, the difference in financial terms can be too large to overcome.
