Arsenal may have to change their plans in the transfer market after missing out on Vinicius Junior, but Michael Owen believes the Gunners already have a potential solution in Marcus Rashford. The former England striker has suggested that the Manchester United forward could be an ideal alternative for Mikel Arteta’s side.
Arsenal had reportedly identified Vinicius as their top target to strengthen the left side of their attack after the departure of Leandro Trossard. The North London club were even prepared to make the Brazilian winger the highest-paid player in Premier League history.
However, Vinicius ultimately decided to remain at Real Madrid after signing a new contract. That decision has forced Arsenal to consider other options, with Bradley Barcola also reportedly among the players being considered.
For Owen, though, Arsenal should look at a more realistic and potentially less expensive solution. He believes Rashford has the qualities required to make an immediate impact on the left wing.
Michael Owen Believes Rashford Could Fit Arsenal
Arsenal’s need for a new left-sided attacker has become increasingly important. Mikel Arteta wants his team to have more attacking depth, especially in wide areas where pace, direct running and goal-scoring ability can make a major difference.
Owen believes Marcus Rashford fits that profile perfectly.
The former Liverpool and England striker told Metro that he does not expect Vinicius Junior to move to Arsenal. However, he believes a transfer for Rashford would make much more sense for the Gunners.
“I don’t see Vinicius Junior joining Arsenal, but a move for someone like Rashford would make sense,” Owen said.
According to Owen, Rashford could fit naturally into Arteta’s tactical plans while also complementing the attacking players already at Arsenal.
There are several reasons why Rashford could appeal to the Gunners:
- He can operate effectively from the left wing.
- His pace provides another threat in transition.
- He has extensive Premier League experience.
- He has proven his ability to score important goals.
- His versatility gives Arteta additional tactical options.
Rashford’s ability to play as both a wide forward and central attacker could also give Arsenal more flexibility during a demanding Premier League season.
Arsenal Forced to Rethink Their Left-Wing Plans
Vinicius Junior was reportedly viewed as a major target by Arsenal. The club were prepared to make a significant financial commitment to bring the Brazilian star to North London.
Part of the reported plan involved offering Vinicius a salary that would have made him the highest-paid player in Premier League history. However, his decision to sign a new contract with Real Madrid ended Arsenal’s hopes of completing the ambitious transfer.
The situation has left Arsenal searching for alternatives.
Bradley Barcola has emerged as another name linked with the club, but Owen believes Rashford could represent a more affordable option. He suggested that the Manchester United forward could potentially be available for around £40 million.
If that valuation proves realistic, Rashford could become an attractive option for Arsenal.
The Gunners would not only be adding an experienced Premier League attacker but could also strengthen their squad without committing the enormous financial package that a Vinicius transfer would have required.
Rashford’s Manchester United Future Remains Uncertain
While Arsenal consider their options, Rashford’s own future at Manchester United remains unclear.
The 28-year-old forward spent the previous season on loan at Barcelona. During his time in Spain, Rashford gained valuable experience and had the opportunity to play alongside some of Europe’s elite players.
He reportedly hoped to remain at Camp Nou on a permanent basis. However, Barcelona chose to pursue Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon, leaving Rashford facing an uncertain situation once again.
His next step could therefore become one of the most interesting transfer stories of the summer.
If Rashford returns to Manchester United, he is expected to join the club’s pre-season preparations. The biggest question will be whether he can establish himself as an important part of the squad again.
Michael Carrick Could Help Rashford Revive His Career
Owen also believes Michael Carrick could play an important role in helping Rashford rediscover his best form if the forward remains at Manchester United.
The former Manchester United midfielder is viewed by Owen as someone who could provide Rashford with the support and confidence needed to perform at his highest level.
“He looks like the right person to embrace him, make him feel part of the squad and bring him back into the competition at Manchester United,” Owen explained.
Rashford has already demonstrated that he possesses the quality to perform at the highest level. His experience with Manchester United and England means his potential remains significant.
Owen also believes his spell at Barcelona could benefit Rashford in the long term.
Playing in a different environment can provide valuable experience, especially for a player attempting to regain confidence and consistency. The time spent in Spain could therefore become an important chapter in Rashford’s career.
Could Rashford Become Arsenal’s Vinicius Alternative?
Arsenal’s pursuit of Vinicius Junior may have ended, but their search for a left-sided attacker is unlikely to stop.
Rashford could offer Arsenal a different type of solution. While he may not possess exactly the same profile as Vinicius, his pace, Premier League experience and ability to play from the left make him an interesting candidate.
For Arteta, the decision would ultimately come down to whether Rashford can fit into Arsenal’s demanding tactical structure and consistently produce at the highest level.
The potential £40 million price tag could also make the deal more appealing compared with Arsenal’s original Vinicius plan.
For now, a move remains only a possibility. Rashford’s Manchester United future must become clearer before Arsenal can seriously consider making an approach.
However, Michael Owen’s recommendation has certainly added another name to the conversation.
If Arsenal genuinely want a proven left-wing attacker without breaking the bank, Marcus Rashford could be one of the most intriguing alternatives available.
