Manchester United are entering the 2026-27 Premier League season with a much bigger target than simply returning to the Champions League. According to Harry Maguire, the Red Devils now have the confidence, momentum and team spirit needed to challenge for the English top-flight title.
The 33-year-old defender believes United’s improvement under Michael Carrick has created a strong foundation for the new campaign. After a difficult period, the club finished third last season and secured Champions League football again.
For Maguire, however, that achievement should be viewed as a starting point rather than the final destination.
The expectations at Old Trafford remain enormous. With Manchester United preparing for another demanding Premier League campaign, the experienced defender insists winning the title must remain the ultimate ambition.
Maguire Sets His Sights on the Premier League Trophy
Manchester United have not won the Premier League since the 2012-13 season. That long wait has increased the pressure surrounding every new campaign.
Maguire understands those expectations and believes the squad should embrace them rather than avoid them.
“We want to improve on last season’s achievement. Everyone wants to win the Premier League, and that will certainly be our target because that is what this club demands,” Maguire said.
His comments underline the mentality United want to take into the 2026-27 campaign.
Finishing third and qualifying for the Champions League represented significant progress, but Maguire believes the team must now take another step forward.
For United, the priorities are clear:
- Challenge for the Premier League title.
- Maintain the consistency shown last season.
- Compete at the highest level in the Champions League.
- Continue developing the squad under Michael Carrick.
- Turn positive momentum into silverware.
That ambition will naturally bring pressure, but Maguire believes the squad is ready for it.
Why Manchester United Are More Confident
One of the biggest reasons behind Maguire’s optimism is Manchester United’s remarkable improvement under Carrick.
Since taking charge in January last season, Carrick helped United produce a much stronger Premier League run. The Red Devils recorded 12 victories and scored 33 goals during that period, more wins and goals than any other club in the league over the same stretch.
Those numbers helped transform United’s season.
After struggling earlier in the campaign, the team eventually climbed to third place and secured a return to the Champions League.
For Maguire, the improvement was not simply about statistics. It also changed the mentality inside the dressing room.
“We have the belief that we can be very competitive and that we can beat anyone on the right day. It is going to be an exciting season,” he added.
That confidence could become one of United’s biggest strengths during the new campaign.
Michael Carrick’s Influence Could Be Crucial
The arrival of stability under Carrick has given Manchester United an opportunity to build rather than constantly start again.
The club’s strong second half of last season showed what could happen when the players consistently perform at a high level.
However, repeating that form across an entire season will be considerably more difficult.
The Premier League demands consistency from August until May, while United will also have Champions League commitments to manage.
Maguire believes continuity will therefore be essential.
Entering his eighth season at Old Trafford, the defender understands how important it is for a squad to maintain standards instead of becoming complacent after a successful period.
United must now prove that their strong run was not simply a temporary surge.
Team Spirit Has Become a Major Strength
Another reason for Maguire’s confidence is the growing bond within the Manchester United squad.
The defender believes the group has developed an unusually strong connection through time spent together at training camps, matches and during a season filled with both positive and difficult moments.
“During my time at the club, we have had some really close groups. Without a doubt, this is one of the closest,” Maguire explained.
That chemistry could become especially important during a long Premier League campaign.
Winning matches naturally brings players closer together, but difficult moments can also strengthen a team when they are handled correctly.
United experienced both extremes last season.
They suffered disappointment in the Europa League final and finished 15th before eventually recovering dramatically to claim third place.
For Maguire, that journey helped shape the current squad.
United Cannot Afford to Stop Improving
Despite the progress, Maguire insists Manchester United cannot become satisfied with finishing third.
The return to the Champions League is important, but the club’s history demands more.
“Spending time together and winning football matches makes a team closer. Losing the Europa League final, finishing 15th and then moving up to third and getting the club back into the Champions League made it a good season, but we cannot stop here,” Maguire said.
That final message could define United’s approach to the 2026-27 season.
The team has already shown that a dramatic turnaround is possible. The next challenge is turning that recovery into sustained success.
Can Manchester United Really Win the Premier League?
Maguire’s confidence does not guarantee Manchester United will lift the trophy. The Premier League remains extremely competitive, with several clubs capable of challenging for the title.
However, United now appear to have something they lacked during difficult periods: belief.
The combination of Carrick’s influence, improved results, squad cohesion and Champions League qualification gives the Red Devils a stronger platform entering the new season.
The biggest question is whether they can maintain that level for an entire campaign.
If United can reproduce the intensity and attacking efficiency shown during the second half of last season, their title ambitions may become more than just optimistic talk.
For now, Harry Maguire is making the message clear: Manchester United are not returning to the Champions League simply to participate. They want to compete at the top—and ultimately, they want the Premier League trophy.
