Bruno Fernandes has rarely been allowed to slow down at Manchester United. Since arriving at Old Trafford in January 2020, the Portuguese-born midfielder has become one of the club’s most trusted players, a regular starter, creative leader and captain.
That could begin to change during the 2026/27 campaign.
Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has hinted that Fernandes may receive more carefully managed minutes this season. With the Red Devils returning to the Champions League and targeting strong runs in domestic cup competitions, protecting their captain could become a major priority.
Fernandes remains central to United’s plans. However, at 31 and approaching his 32nd birthday in September, managing his workload could be crucial to keeping him effective throughout a demanding campaign.
Michael Carrick Wants to Protect Bruno Fernandes
Fernandes has built a reputation for incredible availability since joining Manchester United from Sporting CP.
In fact, Carrick himself relied heavily on the midfielder last season. During his 17 matches in charge, Fernandes played the full 90 minutes in every game.
That level of dependence may not be sustainable forever.
United face a much more demanding schedule in 2026/27. The return of Champions League football means additional midweek matches, while the FA Cup and League Cup could create even more pressure.
Carrick knows that keeping Fernandes fit for the most important moments could be more valuable than playing him in every available match.
“Bruno is a big part of the team and the club in recent times. He has had a huge impact and will continue to do so,” Carrick said.
The United boss also stressed the importance of squad depth and player management.
“Bruno is part of that. He is an important player for us and, of course, our captain, but there are certain things we have to look at to keep him going,” Carrick added.
Those comments suggest rotation is no longer just a possibility. It could become part of United’s strategy.
Fernandes Has Been Almost Impossible to Replace
One reason the situation is so significant is Fernandes’ remarkable record of availability.
Since joining Manchester United, he has rarely missed matches when fit. His importance to the team has often meant that even during busy periods, he has remained on the pitch.
During six full Premier League seasons, Fernandes has played more than 3,000 minutes every campaign. He has also averaged more than 33 full 90-minute appearances per season.
His injury record is similarly impressive.
Fernandes has only missed six matches because of injury or illness since joining United. His longest recent absence came because of a hamstring problem toward the end of Ruben Amorim’s spell in charge last season.
Before that, he missed two matches because of a knee issue in May 2024 and another game because of illness in March 2023.
The numbers underline just how unusual it has been to see Fernandes left out.
Transfer Interest Adds Another Layer
Fernandes’ future has also attracted attention during the summer transfer window.
Galatasaray reportedly showed interest and were said to be willing to offer the midfielder a contract worth around €20 million per year. A year earlier, Al Hilal had also made an approach with an even more lucrative financial package.
Despite those offers, Fernandes has continued to indicate that he wants to remain at Old Trafford.
Manchester United are also continuing discussions over a new contract. His current deal runs until 2027, with the club holding an option for another year.
That makes the coming season particularly important.
If Fernandes stays, United will need to balance his importance with the reality that he is entering the latter stages of his peak years.
Why Rotation Makes Sense for Manchester United
There is a strong argument for giving Fernandes occasional rest.
The main reasons include:
- A heavier fixture schedule due to Champions League football.
- Age management, with Fernandes turning 32 in September.
- Injury prevention across a long season.
- Squad development, allowing other midfielders to take responsibility.
- Peak performance, ensuring Fernandes is fresh for decisive matches.
United now have more creative options than they did in previous seasons.
Youri Tielemans can offer creativity from midfield, while Mason Mount remains capable of playing in an attacking midfield role. Youngster Shea Lacey also impressed during preseason when given opportunities in a similar position.
Those options could give Carrick greater freedom to rotate without completely sacrificing creativity.
Fernandes Has Already Been Rested Before
The idea of Fernandes occasionally starting on the bench is not entirely new.
Ruben Amorim previously warned that the midfielder would need to become comfortable with being rotated. His comments reflected the reality of modern football, where even the most important players cannot play every minute.
Fernandes has experienced limited rotation under previous managers, although it has been extremely rare.
Since joining United, there have been only five occasions when he was either left out or started on the bench in a Premier League match despite being fit.
One notable example came in May 2025, when Fernandes remained an unused substitute during United’s 4-3 defeat to Brentford. The match was played between the two legs of the Europa League semifinal against Athletic Club.
A month earlier, Fernandes came off the bench for the final 30 minutes during a goalless draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Previous Managers Also Managed His Minutes
Ralf Rangnick also used Fernandesfrom the bench in January 2022. The midfielder played only the final 30 minutes during United’s 1-0 defeat to Wolves at Old Trafford after returning from a one-match suspension.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made similar decisions in May 2021.
Fernandes came on for the final 12 minutes during a 2-1 defeat to Leicester City, five days after the Europa League semifinal second leg against Roma and just two days before United faced Liverpool.
Later that month, Solskjaer rested Fernandes completely for a Premier League match against Wolves. That fixture came only three days before the Europa League final against Villarreal.
Those examples show that United have previously recognized the value of protecting Fernandes before major European matches.
Bruno Fernandes Will Still Be Central to United
Rotation does not mean Fernandes is losing his importance.
Quite the opposite.
He remains one of Manchester United’s most influential players and the central figure in their attacking structure. His creativity, leadership and ability to produce decisive moments make him extremely difficult to replace.
The difference could be that Carrick wants to use him more intelligently.
Instead of asking Fernandes to play every minute, United may look to keep him fresh for the biggest matches of the season.
That could mean fewer unnecessary starts, earlier substitutions when games are under control and more rest around congested periods.
A Smarter Approach for Carrick
Michael Carrick faces a delicate balancing act.
Manchester United need Bruno Fernandes at his best, but they also need him available when the biggest games arrive. With Champions League football returning and domestic competitions adding to the schedule, protecting the captain could ultimately strengthen the entire squad.
Fernandes has been almost irreplaceable since arriving at Old Trafford. Now, Carrick appears ready to make sure that dependence does not become a weakness.
The midfielder is still expected to play a major role. The difference in 2026/27 could be how carefully those minutes are managed.
For Manchester United, that may be less about dropping Bruno Fernandes and more about making sure their most important player is ready when it matters most.
