Chelsea have entered a new chapter off the pitch after Clearlake Capital took full control of the club, bringing an end to Todd Boehly and Mark Walter’s involvement as shareholders.
The ownership change also marks the end of Boehly’s tenure as Chelsea chairman, a position he had held since the consortium led by him and Clearlake completed the purchase of the club in 2022.
Clearlake, led by co-founders Behdad Eghbali and Jose E. Feliciano, has now moved from being the majority shareholder to having full control of Chelsea. The transaction reportedly involved around £950 million in shares held by Boehly and Walter.
Despite the significant change in ownership structure, Chelsea have stated that there will be no changes to the club’s day-to-day operations, leadership or strategic direction.
Clearlake Takes Full Control of Chelsea
The latest transaction changes the balance of power at Stamford Bridge.
Before the deal, Clearlake held the largest share of Chelsea, while Boehly, Walter and Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss were also part of the ownership group.
Clearlake was founded by Behdad Eghbali and Jose E. Feliciano, who have been involved in Chelsea’s ownership since the 2022 takeover.
The latest agreement means Clearlake is now in full control of the Premier League club after acquiring the minority interests held by Boehly and Walter. Wyss also sold his stake as part of the ownership transition, according to reports.

Boehly became one of the most recognisable figures in Chelsea’s ownership group after the club was acquired from Roman Abramovich in 2022.
The consortium involving Boehly, Clearlake and other partners completed the takeover during a major transition for Chelsea.
Abramovich had been sanctioned by the UK government in March 2022 over alleged links to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Abramovich denied those allegations.
Following the sale, Boehly took on the role of Chelsea chairman and became a prominent public figure around the club.
His time in the position has now come to an end.
After leaving the chairmanship, Boehly thanked the people who had contributed to Chelsea during his time at the club, including the Premier League, coaches, players, staff and supporters.
He also expressed appreciation for his partnership with Clearlake and the wider ownership group.
Boehly said he was confident Chelsea were positioned for continued success under Clearlake’s leadership.
Why Did the Ownership Change Happen?
Reports about a possible change in Chelsea’s ownership structure had been circulating before the transaction was confirmed.
BBC Sport reported in August that Boehly and Walter were considering selling their stakes. Reports subsequently indicated that discussions about the ownership structure had been taking place following disagreements within the group that had become visible in 2024.
The situation eventually led the different sides to consider buying one another’s interests.
The latest agreement resolves that ownership question by giving Clearlake full control of the club.
For Chelsea, the change represents a major shift at ownership level, even though the club says its football and commercial operations will continue without immediate changes.
Chelsea’s Progress Since the 2022 Takeover
Chelsea have experienced significant changes both on and off the pitch since the 2022 takeover.

Walter, who is also CEO of global financial services company Guggenheim Partners, had been part of the group that acquired Chelsea in 2022.
Boehly also previously worked at Guggenheim Partners before becoming involved in the ownership of Chelsea and other major sports properties.
Walter’s departure from Chelsea comes shortly after another major transaction involving his sports portfolio.
According to the information surrounding the deal, Walter sold the Los Angeles Lakers for a reported record $12.5 billion in August, only a year after acquiring a majority stake in the NBA franchise.
His Chelsea exit therefore represents another significant change in his sports investments.
