Patrick Dorgu has opened up about the position he would most like to make his own at Manchester United, with the Denmark international admitting that having a more consistent role could help him get the most out of his training.
The 21-year-old has experienced plenty of positional changes since arriving at Old Trafford. Rather than being restricted to one role, Dorgu has been asked to operate in different areas of the left and right flank depending on the tactical demands of his manager.
That versatility has become an important part of his game. However, Dorgu believes having one primary position could make certain aspects of his development easier.
Despite that preference, the Manchester United player has also made it clear that he remains willing to follow instructions and play wherever his team needs him.
Dorgu Prefers the Left-Back Role
Dorgu considers left-back to be the most natural position for him, largely because that was where he began his professional career with Lecce.
His experience in Italy helped him develop as a defender while also giving him opportunities to contribute further forward. Over time, that combination allowed Dorgu to become a versatile player capable of operating in several positions.
His transition to Manchester United has continued that trend.
The Denmark international has featured as a left wing-back, right winger and left winger. The changes have required him to adapt his responsibilities depending on the tactical setup and the players available around him.
Dorgu believes a more permanent role could nevertheless benefit his development, particularly during training.
“I prefer having one fixed position. It makes things easier to work on during training,” Dorgu told Tipsbladet.
His comments highlight an important aspect of his development at Manchester United. While positional versatility can be valuable, having a defined role can also allow a player to focus more specifically on the technical and tactical demands of that position.
Manchester United Have Used Dorgu in Different Roles
Dorgu joined Manchester United from Lecce during the winter transfer window for a reported £25 million fee.
Under Ruben Amorim, he was used primarily as a left wing-back. The role suited the tactical structure while also allowing Dorgu to contribute to attacks from a deeper starting position.
The situation changed following Michael Carrick’s arrival as Manchester United manager.
Dorgu subsequently featured more regularly as a winger. He also returned to a left-back role when Luke Shaw was unavailable due to fitness issues.
The changes demonstrate the range of responsibilities Dorgu can handle, but they have also meant that his role has not always remained fixed.
For a young player still developing at the highest level, those adjustments can present both opportunities and challenges.
Dorgu, however, does not see positional flexibility as a major problem.
“Many players nowadays can play in several positions. I just want to be on the pitch, regardless of the position,” he explained.
Versatility Remains Part of Dorgu’s Game
Dorgu’s ability to play in different positions is not something that began at Manchester United.
During his time at Lecce, he already experienced a degree of tactical flexibility. Although left-back became his most natural position, he also played further forward and even appeared as a right winger.
That background has helped him adjust to the demands of Manchester United.
Under Carrick, Dorgu has spent more time as a left winger. Meanwhile, Denmark have also used him on the right side, showing that his international role can differ from his club responsibilities.
This versatility gives coaches more options when building their teams.

Training requirements can differ significantly between a full-back and a winger. A defender may spend more time working on positioning, defensive duels and buildup play, while a winger can focus more heavily on attacking movement, one-on-one situations and creating opportunities.
A consistent role could therefore allow Dorgu to concentrate more heavily on the specific details required from him.
At the same time, modern football increasingly demands players who can adapt.
Dorgu understands that reality and has not suggested that he wants to avoid playing in unfamiliar positions.
“I started my professional career as a left-back, so that position feels most natural to me, but I can also play an attacking role like I have done at United,” Dorgu said.
That balance could be important as he continues his development at Old Trafford.
Dorgu’s Priority Is Still Playing
Although Dorgu has identified left-back as his preferred position, his biggest priority remains getting onto the pitch.
That attitude gives Manchester United another useful option in their squad. Whether deployed deeper or higher up the flank, Dorgu has shown that he is prepared to adapt to the demands of his manager.
For the player himself, the ideal situation may be having one primary position while retaining the flexibility to cover elsewhere when required.
His comments therefore do not represent a rejection of positional versatility. Instead, they underline his belief that a regular role could make his development more straightforward while preserving his willingness to help the team.
As Dorgu continues his Manchester United career, his ability to combine a natural defensive position with attacking qualities could remain an important part of his progression.
