Harry Maguire, a prominent player for Manchester United, has declared that the club has successfully moved past the recent controversies surrounding Lisandro Martinez, the Argentine defender who recently voiced some strong criticisms directed at the club’s management. Maguire expressed his hopes that the team can rebound from their current struggles and get back to winning ways.
Last week, following a disappointing 0-2 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League, Martinez publicly questioned the team’s ability to compete on the European stage. He also made references to technical director Jason Wilcox and the ownership of the club, stirring significant conversations among fans and analysts alike. Shortly after, Martinez took to social media to clarify his remarks, apologizing for his statements and emphasizing that the players also share responsibility for Manchester United’s poor performances.
In the aftermath of this incident, manager Michael Carrick opted to start Martinez in Sunday’s match (October 18, 2026) against Leeds United, which ended in a 1-1 draw. However, due to an injury, Martinez was substituted at half-time for Noussair Mazraoui, raising concerns about his fitness going forward.
Maguire Addresses Internal Club Dynamics
Maguire acknowledged that the atmosphere within Manchester United had been tumultuous due to various comments and reactions throughout the past week. That said, he believes the issue regarding Martinez has been resolved following his apology, allowing the squad to focus on their performance. Furthermore, Maguire praised Martinez for his strong first-half display against Leeds, hoping that his injury isn’t severe and that he can contribute to the team’s efforts soon.
“Clearly, there’s been a lot of noise around the club over the past week – it happens every week, but this time it felt a bit more intense. Lisandro has apologized, and we’ve moved on,” Maguire shared with Sky Sports. “He did brilliantly in the first half, and he deserves recognition for that. Let’s hope he recovers quickly.”
Striving for Improvement Amidst Struggles
This season, Manchester United has faced challenges in achieving positive results, having managed only one victory across their first seven Premier League fixtures, recording four draws and two losses. This dismal performance marks the worst start for the club since the 1986-87 season. Their latest win in any competition prior to facing Leeds was against Sabah on September 10, during the Champions League.
Maguire stressed that playing for a club of Manchester United’s stature inherently comes with immense pressure, particularly when the results do not align with expectations. He urged his teammates to rise to the occasion, adapt, and find ways to help the team navigate through this tough period.
“When you represent this club, the team spirit is constantly tested, especially when matches aren’t going your way. We haven’t performed well enough to achieve the victories we had last season. We must learn to cope with the pressures that come week after week and work together to turn things around,” he asserted.
Maguire emphasized the importance of unity among the players as they strive to overcome their current challenges. He believes that remaining supportive of one another is crucial as they prepare for their next match without dwelling too long on the Leeds result. Looking ahead, Manchester United is set to clash with Como in the Champions League on Wednesday, and time is of the essence as they ready themselves for this critical encounter. “We will stick together and keep fighting. We have another big game coming up on Wednesday, and we’re looking forward to it,” Maguire concluded.
