Manchester United legend Roy Keane has once again questioned Michael Carrick’s ability to manage one of football’s biggest clubs. The former captain believes Carrick may not be good enough for the long-term demands of the Old Trafford job, especially as the team continues to struggle for results.

Keane has also challenged Carrick and his coaching staff to take greater responsibility and deliver an immediate improvement. With Manchester United going through a difficult period, the former midfielder believes the manager must prove that he deserves to remain in charge.

United have failed to win a match in any competition since the beginning of September. Their recent struggles have become even more concerning after conceding seven goals across their last two fixtures, both of which ended in defeat.

The poor run has left the Red Devils 16th in the Premier League table and struggling to keep pace in the Champions League.

Carrick’s future was reportedly discussed during the week, but the club’s management ultimately decided to keep him in charge for Saturday’s meeting with Chelsea on October 31, 2026.

That decision has not convinced Keane, who has made his position on Carrick’s appointment increasingly clear.

Roy Keane Questions Carrick’s Long-Term Ability

Speaking on Stick to Football, as reported by Teamtalk on Friday, October 30, Keane explained that he had doubts about Carrick’s suitability for the Manchester United job from the beginning.

According to the former United captain, managing a team for a handful of matches is very different from taking responsibility for an entire football club.

The role involves much more than preparing players for individual fixtures. A manager must oversee pre-season preparations, manage expectations, build relationships with the club’s hierarchy and influence recruitment decisions.

Keane believes those responsibilities represent a much bigger challenge for Carrick.

“When he got the job last year and Carrick started managing the team, from day one we were saying he might not be good enough for the long term,” Keane said.

He also highlighted the difference between taking charge temporarily and becoming the permanent manager of a club with Manchester United’s expectations.

“Managing a few games is one thing. Suddenly, you’re managing the whole football club, from pre-season and expectations to recruitment,” he added.

For Keane, the issue is not simply about a few disappointing results. He is questioning whether Carrick has the experience and authority required to manage the club over an extended period.

Keane Criticises the Changing Attitude Around Manchester United

The former midfielder also questioned how people around Manchester United have responded to Carrick’s changing fortunes.

When the manager delivered positive results last season, many supporters and observers argued that he deserved the permanent position.

However, Keane believes the reaction has changed dramatically as performances have deteriorated.

He suggested that responsibility is now being shifted towards other figures at the club, including the board and senior executives.

“Last year they were getting good results and people were saying he should get the job because of those results. Now, when the results aren’t good, suddenly the board, Jason Wilcox or somebody else is being blamed,” Keane said.

His comments reflect a wider concern about accountability at Old Trafford.

Manchester United have struggled to establish consistency, and the pressure is not limited to the manager. The club’s recruitment strategy, squad performances and decision-making have also attracted scrutiny.

Nevertheless, Keane believes Carrick and his coaching team cannot avoid responsibility for what happens on the pitch.

Keane Challenges Carrick and His Coaching Staff

Keane also directed criticism towards Carrick’s coaching staff, including Jonny Evans, Jonathan Woodgate and Steve Holland.

The former United captain believes everyone involved in leading the first team should understand the scale of the responsibility that comes with working at Old Trafford.

He argued that they must show greater courage and respond to the difficult situation with results rather than explanations.

“They are lucky to be involved at Manchester United. They have to be brave and start getting results on Saturday. Go and win at Chelsea,” Keane insisted.

The message is particularly significant given the timing of his comments.

Manchester United’s upcoming visit to Stamford Bridge could become an important test for Carrick. Another disappointing performance would increase the pressure on a manager already dealing with questions about his future.

A positive result, on the other hand, could provide some breathing room and help restore confidence within the squad.

This Is Not the First Time Keane Has Taken Aim at Carrick

Keane’s latest criticism is part of a long-running history of sharp exchanges involving the two former Manchester United midfielders.

Their disagreements date back to 2014, when Keane criticised Carrick for allegedly showing insufficient enthusiasm after United faced Olympiacos in the Champions League.

The comments also attracted attention because Carrick’s wife responded to Keane through social media before subsequently deleting her post.

The tension resurfaced in January 2026, when Carrick returned to Old Trafford as Manchester United’s interim manager.

Keane once again made a personal remark, this time referring to Carrick’s wife during his criticism.

“His wife can always come in because sometimes she has a big mouth,” Keane said.

He followed that comment with another sarcastic remark, suggesting that Carrick’s wife might even be the person giving the players their pre-match instructions.

The exchanges demonstrate that Keane’s criticism of Carrick goes beyond the latest run of poor results. Their history has included several public disagreements over the years.

Chelsea Match Could Be Crucial for Carrick

Despite Keane’s strong opinions, Carrick remains in charge and has an immediate opportunity to respond on the pitch.

Manchester United need more than encouraging performances. After an extended winless run and consecutive defeats, results have become essential.

Keane has made his expectations clear: Carrick and his coaching staff must take responsibility and deliver a victory.

The Chelsea fixture could therefore carry significant consequences for the manager’s future. Whether Carrick can silence his critics will depend on how Manchester United perform at Stamford Bridge.
