In the high-octane world of international badminton, few titles are as coveted—and as scrutinized—as that of World No. 1. For Malaysia’s top men’s doubles pair, Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, achieving this status has brought with it not only a sense of pride and accomplishment but also an enormous amount of pressure. Yet instead of wilting under the spotlight, the dynamic duo has used the challenge to fuel their growth, deepen their partnership, and redefine what Malaysian badminton can achieve on the global stage.
Their rise to the top has been anything but linear. Marked by early struggles, a temporary split, and a dramatic reunion, the Goh-Izzuddin partnership is a tale of perseverance, mutual respect, and tactical brilliance. Today, as they stand tall as the No. 1 ranked men’s doubles team in the world, their journey offers invaluable insights into what it takes to succeed at the very highest level.
A Journey Forged in Adversity
The story of Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin is one of resilience and reunion. First paired in 2017 by the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), the two quickly showed potential with complementary playing styles—Goh, the explosive shot-maker with a penchant for creative play, and Izzuddin, the rock-solid defender with impeccable court awareness. But despite some notable performances on the international circuit, inconsistency and mounting pressure eventually led to their split in early 2022.
At the time, both players acknowledged the need to pursue individual growth. Goh began training with other partners, while Izzuddin sought to recalibrate his game. But as fate would have it, their individual journeys eventually brought them back to each other. Less than a year later, the duo reunited with renewed purpose, improved skill sets, and a stronger mental foundation.
“We realized that what we had was special,” said Goh in a recent interview. “Sometimes, you need space to grow. But when we came back together, we knew exactly what we wanted—and how to achieve it.”
The Road to World No. 1
Since reuniting, Goh and Izzuddin have embarked on a phenomenal run of form. They clinched back-to-back Super 500 titles in Indonesia and Thailand, reached the finals of the All England Open, and eventually won the prestigious BWF World Tour Finals. Their performances against top pairs from Indonesia, China, Japan, and Korea showcased their versatility and tactical depth.
Perhaps most impressively, their rise to World No. 1 wasn’t fueled by one-off results, but by sustained consistency. Over a 12-month stretch, they maintained a win rate of over 75%, frequently defeating pairs ranked in the top 5. Whether on fast courts or slow, against aggressive or defensive styles, Goh and Izzuddin adapted, adjusted, and prevailed.
“The key was learning from every match,” said Izzuddin. “Win or lose, we always go back to the tape, analyze, and improve. It’s about constant evolution.”
Their achievement marked a historic moment for Malaysian badminton, as it was the first time a homegrown men’s doubles pair topped the world rankings since Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong in 2010.
Handling the Spotlight
With the No. 1 ranking came media attention, fan expectations, and the burden of consistency. Every move, every result, every interaction came under the microscope. For many athletes, such scrutiny can become a distraction. But for Goh and Izzuddin, it became a source of motivation.
“We knew people were watching,” Goh admitted. “Instead of letting it stress us out, we used it as fuel. We want to show that Malaysians can lead the world in men’s doubles again.”
They also credit their mental coach for helping them stay grounded. Through mindfulness training, performance visualization, and stress-management techniques, the pair has developed a stronger mental framework to cope with the rigors of elite sport.
“Our sessions with the psychologist helped us understand our triggers,” said Izzuddin. “Whether it’s dealing with a tough loss or staying focused when ahead, we’re now better equipped mentally.”
The Chemistry Factor
One of the defining features of the Goh-Izzuddin partnership is their undeniable chemistry. On court, their understanding is almost telepathic. Goh’s aggressive pushes and deceptive flicks are perfectly complemented by Izzuddin’s anticipatory blocks and lightning-fast recoveries. Their communication during rallies is constant, subtle, and effective.
Off the court, their friendship is equally strong. The duo often appears in each other’s social media posts, share inside jokes, and train together with enthusiasm. This camaraderie translates into trust and resilience during high-pressure moments.
“There’s no ego,” Goh said. “If I make a mistake, he’s there to back me up—and vice versa. That’s what makes us strong.”
Tactical Evolution
While their natural chemistry is a huge asset, Goh and Izzuddin’s rise is also rooted in their evolving tactical play. Earlier in their careers, they were known primarily for fast, high-risk rallies. But today’s version of the duo is far more calculated and mature.
Their shot selection has become smarter, their court coverage more efficient. They vary tempo, use sharp angles, and employ deceptive placements to break down opponents. Against taller European pairs, they use flat drives and sudden pace changes. Against nimble Asian opponents, they rely on early interceptions and front-court pressure.
Coach Rexy Mainaky, a former Olympic champion, has played a pivotal role in refining their game.
“Rexy helped us see the game differently,” said Izzuddin. “He emphasized structure, patience, and rotation. That made a huge difference.”
Building a Legacy
With the Paris 2024 Olympics just behind them and the next Olympic cycle now underway, Goh and Izzuddin have set their sights on building a lasting legacy. Their immediate goals include defending their World Tour Finals title, winning a medal at the 2025 World Championships, and contributing significantly to Malaysia’s Thomas Cup campaign.
“We’re not satisfied with just being No. 1,” Goh declared. “We want to be remembered as one of the best pairs Malaysia has ever produced.”
Their coach agrees. “What sets them apart is their hunger. They’re never complacent. They train with intensity every day,” said Rexy.
Giving Back to the Community
As national heroes, Goh and Izzuddin understand their responsibility extends beyond the court. They’ve participated in youth development programs, conducted badminton clinics across the country, and frequently visit schools to inspire the next generation.
In one such session in Terengganu, Izzuddin’s home state, hundreds of young players gathered to learn footwork drills, basic doubles positioning, and—perhaps most importantly—the importance of perseverance.
“We tell them our story,” Izzuddin said. “How we failed, split, came back, and now we’re No. 1. If we can do it, so can they.”
Their impact is already being felt. Badminton academies across Malaysia have reported a surge in interest in doubles training, with many young players citing Goh-Izzuddin as their idols.
