Liverpool are reportedly ready to invest heavily to secure Dominik Szoboszlai’s future at Anfield, as interest from Spanish giants Real Madrid intensifies.

The Hungarian international has been one of Liverpool’s most consistent performers in the challenging 2025/26 season. In 33 appearances across all competitions, Szoboszlai has contributed eight goals and seven assists, a record that has earned him recognition as one of the Reds’ standout players this campaign.

His impressive form has naturally sparked discussions about a high-value contract extension. Currently, Szoboszlai is tied to the deal he signed upon his move from RB Leipzig in 2023, which runs until 2028.

Status of Contract Negotiations

Earlier, Szoboszlai confirmed that there had been no significant progress in talks over a new contract, although he expressed his desire to remain at Liverpool. He is understood to be seeking a salary package reflecting his importance under manager Arne Slot, especially if the club wants to fend off interest from Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.

According to reports from TEAMtalk, citing Hungarian media outlet Blikkhu, Liverpool are prepared to significantly increase Szoboszlai’s wages. The Merseyside club is reportedly offering £250,000 per week, a substantial jump from his current £120,000 per week.

If accepted, this would place Szoboszlai among Liverpool’s highest-paid players, roughly on par with Cody Gakpo in fourth place, while still trailing the club’s top three earners. Mohamed Salah leads the wage chart with £400,000 per week, followed by Virgil van Dijk at £350,000 and summer signing Alexander Isak at £280,000.

However, it remains unclear whether Szoboszlai will accept the offer. Other Hungarian reports suggest the midfielder is seeking up to £300,000 per week to commit to a new deal at Anfield. Since joining Liverpool, Szoboszlai has amassed 23 goals and 21 assists across 127 appearances in all competitions.

Strategic Move Beyond Immediate Necessity

From a timeline perspective, Szoboszlai’s contract is not yet urgent, as he has more than two and a half years remaining. Nevertheless, Liverpool’s decision to proactively extend and enhance his deal signals the club’s long-term ambitions.

The Reds appear keen to avoid past mistakes, notably in the cases of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ibrahima Konaté. The latter is reportedly likely to leave on a free transfer at the end of the season. Similar contract considerations affect Andy Robertson and Rhys Williams, while young talent Trey Nyoni faces the prospect of leaving in June due to limited first-team opportunities under Slot.

Meanwhile, veterans Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, Alisson Becker, Curtis Jones, and Joe Gomez will all enter the final year of their contracts in 2027. Given their ages, it is possible that the first three names could depart Anfield within the next 18 months.

Curtis Jones Next in Line?

Among Liverpool’s squad, Curtis Jones is viewed as a strong candidate for the next contract extension. His passing accuracy and defensive contributions this season rank among the club’s best, further highlighting his value to the squad and future plans.

By locking down Szoboszlai, Liverpool not only protects their midfield core but also sends a message to other key players and rival clubs about the club’s intent to maintain competitiveness at the highest level. Szoboszlai’s technical ability, versatility, and influence in games make him a central figure in Liverpool’s tactical setup, especially in matches requiring creativity and goal contributions from midfield.

Fending Off Spanish Interest

Real Madrid’s interest has added urgency to Liverpool’s contract strategy. The Spanish champions are actively seeking midfield reinforcements, and Szoboszlai’s performances have naturally drawn their attention. Securing a long-term deal for the Hungarian star ensures that Liverpool retain one of their most reliable playmakers while avoiding potential disruptions in the transfer market.

The proposed contract, if accepted, would position Szoboszlai as a cornerstone of Liverpool’s squad for the coming seasons. With his current trajectory and the club’s investment, he is expected to play a pivotal role in Liverpool’s pursuit of domestic and European success.

As negotiations progress, fans and analysts alike are watching closely, with the expectation that a deal could set a precedent for other key players in the squad, reinforcing Liverpool’s ambitions both on and off the field.
